Gentlemen and ladies---you need nylons.

Ladies nylon knee-highs, to be specific. They make pretty good cheap medium bags: dump the stuff in, self-knot the top, use, and toss when done.

I don't recommend used ones.

Have you bought panty hose lately? It is not cheap. Media bag is only $1 at PetSmart. The large one is $5. Panty hose is more than $5.

Not panty hose. Kneehighs. 5.00 for 10 pair. That's 20 for 5.00 or a quarter apiece.

Depending on the mesh size, a cheap net can be used for this as well. Just cut the netting from the frame, fill it up with GAC, GFO etc and then tie it off with a rubber band. Piece of cake.

I have found that panty hose degrade. Where a poly filter bag will last years you might get 3-5 months out of panty hose. Last time I used panty hose and went to move the media bags I made out of them they fell apart and all my denitrate rock wound up on the bottom of the sump.

Other weird uses of common items:
1. a mini colander instead of a net: this spares fish gill covers getting snagged.
2. plastic needlepoint embroidery canvas (cuts with scissors, stitches with fishing line, makes boxes, covers, barriers through which water can flow. [Hobby store: ask the clerk]
3. pillow stuffing: subs for floss, costs far less: [hobby or sewing store] use and toss.
regarding the post above, a netting bag (you can get net where diy wedding supplies are sold in hobby or fabric store) full of coral rubble is a good copepod nursery in your sump. Just shake it out now and again to clean it (using a filter sock on the system when donig so.)
Strawberry cartons (those plastic ones) turned upside down and filled with coral rubble also make good copepod nurseries.

In regards to the pillow stuffing mentioned above, my dog tears up stuffed animals like nobody's business. Sometimes I'll use that stuffing during a water change to polish my water.
I was going to throw it away anyways so I figure I might as well get some use out of it first.

Re frangibility of nylons---carbon, however should be changed fairly frequently: it has a nasty quality---it charges up, then begins to break down, and releases what it absorbed.

I use nylons and quilting batting (pillow stuffing). They work well and are cheap, and most often than not the same as what they sell as "aquarium floss" etc.
