GFCI Outlet Adapter

Speaking as a licensed electrical contractor, that will work fine but I don't know for how long.

You are best to have one installed. Or better yet get a gfci circuit breaker if you can.

Moving tank around the house and the outlet it's going to an outlet that is not GFCI and I'm too chicken shiit to touch it and mess around with it so found this. Thought I'd share it in case someone is looking to do the same...

I don't work for frags.. I work for friendship. If you feel bad, you can offer me a cup of water for the trouble.

hint hint

You think?

Lmao :)

Honestly though, I will work with anyone who is in need of life safety work, which I consider a GFCI on a saltwater tank to be. I am a professional electrician but I don't want to see anyone get hurt or worse because they can't afford the work.

It's super easy to install. I can install one for you if you need help but it's a pretty direct swap. Turn off the breaker and just swap it out. I think I might even have an extra outlet laying around, I'll check when I get home.

So is the concensus that the main power outlet that goes to your tank should have a gfi outlet instead of a normal outlet plug?

I thought since all outlets are tied into the house circuit breaker, it will trip that if it ever has a short?

Would love to hear from pro electricians on this board or people that had experience with them.

It depends on how you wire it and where it is in the circuit.

So is it better to change over the outlet plug to a gfi outlet on the wall where you have the tank getting power from?

IMO the best way, many times is a GFCI breaker in the panel. It’s not subject to salt sire or obscured by sump and equiptment.

Inwall, if you pigtail the line, only that receptacle will be protected

If that circuit was run in 12/3 w ground or 14/3 w ground then your only real option is to pigtail.
