Ghetto Rig

yeah Its temporary, and yeah im guessing if i dont splash the water from the sump on the copper it should be ok. if not oh well. thanks sdc for the a+ its nicer than the negative. lol. oh well thanks guys

seawater corrodes copper. then you are effectively (over)dosing your reef tank with copper. You won't have ich, but you won't have corals either.

the blacklight thing looks cool for a while, I tried it, but the long wavelength UVA destroys the soft tissues. That's why we have UV shielded MH bulbs. If you like your corals, be nice to them and don't do it.

here's my best ghetto project. the light stand is built from PVC, the icecap ballast is suspended by zip ties, and the cover for the frame we sewed out of desert camo material. Its no longer set up, but its 175w MH over a drilled 15g.

and here's a skimmer I built, but never tweaked it enough

I need to take pictures of my RO/DI unit, its ghetto-tastic

everything is ghettoized accordingly lol

everything is ghettoized accordingly lol

Here comes my slum of ghettoized thingamajigs that all work and strangely the spell corrector recognizes thingamajig as a correct spelled word?

Here's a pic of my first DIY attempt.

I wish I had a pic of my DIY CO2 reactor I had on my 20g planted tank. It was a 2ltr bottle with a hole drilled in the cap. I shoved a piece of airline tubing into it, used wood glue to seal it, then ran the other end of the line to a powerhead so the CO2 would get diffused into the water.

It was powered by sugar, yeast, & water. Ugly as hell but it worked.

You mean one of these :P

here's my brine shrimp hatchery Cut the top of the pepsi bottle off and shoved it down in the inside all the way down to the bottom so the air bubbles will keep everything in suspension and not just around the wand if you just use the bottom ;)

Here is my 4 way 220 outlet that is on its own 20amp breaker in the breaker box. As you can see its sticking out of the wall as we just screwed it to the wall instead of cutting a hole in the wall lol... Looks harmless right? Wait till you see what is mounted on the wall 2 feet above it lmfao!

IMG_0298.jpg

nothing big here just a few peices of different size acrlic sheets on top of each other for a splash gaurd lol
IMG_0299.jpg

This is somewhat funny, when i did my baffles i used acrylic sheets really thin and aquarium glue and the sump is glass so needless to say most of the baffles gave in under pressure so i had to re-inforce this one with umm well you can see for yourself lol.

as you can see the sealent gave in ;)
IMG_0300.jpg

the fix more arcylic shimed in along the sides of the tank to hold the baffle in place!

IMG_0303.jpg

Now here is where things get super ghetto lol. So i bought a huge light fixture and forgot to buy the hanging kit :/ so me and i went to lowes bout some chains and some other thingamajigs and made one myself. As you can see the actually eye bolt that goes into the ceiling i missed the friggen stud in the ceiling and didnt feel like redoing it so the fix? pull the extra chain and use a decking screw with a coaxe cable wire clamp holding thingamajig lol so hopefully it will hold if the eye bolt gives out and also i put eye bolts into the top of the light fixture lmao! the pictures speak for there self :P

That will not work for so many reasons.

1st is that you have to have air moving through the evaporator and condensor coils for the unit to cool correctly, by removing the shroud you lost that.

2nd is that you are just adding the heat back into your stand, thus defeating the whole purpose.

The approach I would take if you want it to work and still be ghetto would be to replace the evaporator coil with titanium tubing and use it as a drop in chiller, but you still have to vent the condensor out of the stand.

Nice try though.

i bet it works for a couple degrees. lol

thumbs up.

A++ from me Jamesvallison
I can’t even see the pics at work but I remember looking them a few weeks ago. If I hadn’t taken Heating and Air Conditioning in school I might have tried the same thing.

I am sad to say that since my tank upgrade, I have nothing to add :(

I chose safety and smooth operation over ghetto.

Tho it doesnt diminish the pride of my former ghettoness :)

Happy birthday Mr Ghetto thread! And congratulations Joshua for birthing this baby!!

I don't think you should be sad about anything on your new setup, its beautiful. My setup no longer really has anything ghetto about it either, but we all start somewhere.

This is, without a doubt, the best time-waster of a thread I've seen yet... I love it!! Massively ghetto-fabulous, ingenious, and (more than a few times) downright scary... Reefing at its best!
