Ghetto Rig

Here's my Co2 scrubber...doing a decent job...my PH rose from 7.8 - 8.15

...total ghetto build..cost less than $1.

Its a kiddies water bottle. The sipper is my outlet to my skimmer air inlet hose. I just added a piece of rigid tubing inside the bottle and drilled a hole on the top to let air in.
Its filled with sofnolime pellets.

Man which mine would grow at all. It has been the same size for 4 months. Not dying off though so I guess that is good. Maybe it's my ghetto fuge lighting (see signature).

Actually yeah you probally want something closer to 6500k or 5500k. I use the same cfl bulb and get decent growth. Of course light isn't the only thing needed for plant growth so if your system is fairly low in nutrients you wont see the same growth (which is a good thing since the goal is to lower nutrients).

where do you get your pellets

My chaeto fuge setup is so similar to Ritters that the gf thought it was mine... only real difference is the tubing.... too funny.

I am loving this thread! I have a few that I need to get some pics of. i have a DIY PVC denitrator coil -not too ghetto, Used 12v led lights from a kit for my motorcycle as my moonlights and have fans hooked to my sump for cooling. All in all, not so bad compared to others.

I will have to add that I am setting up a frag tank with a DIY stand and a 48" T5HO shop light cut down to 36". Still trying to figure out the lighting but it might work.

Here is a PIC of my DIY denitrator coil. I know folks that have used a Coffee can for the tubing. mine is effectionately called the Pipe Bomb

and some home made overflow silencers.

do you have a build thread for the pipe bomb
would love to know how it works ...i'm having some nitrate problems of my own

HAHA!!! nope, no build thread on this site. it is a VERY simple devise. I took ~60ft of 1/4" black airline tubing (aka sprayer tubing at Tractor Supply Co.) and coiled it up with my hand and then stuffed it into teh tube to keep it neat. crammed a cap on each end. Ive seen folks use a coffee can to keep it neat. I drilled holes in one cap and threaded the tag ends thru it. one end I connected to an aqualifter pump and the other has an airline needle valve for flow adjustment. just adjust to a steady drip just below a stream. give it a few weeks to cycle in and then your nitrates will start to drop. my old tank ran zero nitrates while I had this thing. I plan to try and manifold it into my main plumbing so I don thav eto deal with the maint of the aqualifter but IDK yet.

teh water never exits the tubing until the valve. Bigger is not necessarily better as the friction on the water makes it tough for the pump to overcome. this one was on my 75 and is now on my 180. Iplan to build a 2nd one to double capacity for the larger tank.
