Ghetto Rig

definitely ghetto. Be careful though I've seen pumps (larger rio pump and a mag5) break the insulation on the cord or the seal to the motor and short out from the salt water before. Though I bet tying some fishing line around it might take the strain off of the cord and still count as ghetto.

Yeah I was worried about the same thing....I was just using it until i got a replace impeller for my circulation pump so by this weekend it should be out of the tank......and when I looked at the tank just now it is no longer moving..guess it found a place of rest finally.....OH WELL it was fun while it lasted........back to my next ghetto project......

I'm wondering how well a ghetto fridge style chiller would work if you got a small fridge like a wee bar fridge and carefully gutted the working parts from it so the cold side coils (expansion) are submerged in the sump and the hot side (condensation) coils are sitting propped up in the air. Control could be as simple a turning the fridge pump on and off depending on tank temperature

I'm not an expert on this, but I have read a number of DIY chiller threads, and there seems to be a common problem that mini-fridges aren't designed to continually cool their contents. In a fridge, it kicks on and off and heat is not introduced unless the door is opened, and obviously through conduction too, but when trying to use it as a chiller, you're pumping warm water through the fridge, and the fridge has to continually cool the water and that leads to a burnout.

Take that for what it's worth, that seemed to be the outcome of most of the mini-fridges turned DIY Chiller that I've come across

thanks for the advice, it is definitely a much larger cooling load that ordinarily would exist.. I think it might be drawing board time again

yep i still do ghetto!!

just a quick veiw....

started with this $10 thing..

little paint...some holes...

fan...110v jumper for pod 2....

and **POOF**

the guts all zip tied to the heatsink

nice led spread being 12" above the tub :)

How many leds are in there? Nice looking setup!

there are only 10 leds for each pod...4 cree q5 white and 6 of the q5 blues...thats the best combo i came up with to get a 14-15k color.

this is the main reason i split my hqi to led conversion to make 2 of these pods. 24 leds all in one spot over acans in a little tank like this made them not open up :( so i spread the love :p

Custom color,

that's a great idea....nice work in creating a LED lighting fixture. What would you say they cost you a piece to make if I can ask?

I don't know how I didn't see this thread until now, got to be the greatest thread of all time. MacGuyver would be proud!

Seeing this thread makes me believe in myself! I'll have to post some pictures of my denitrator although it seems to be a common design.

can you explain all that is used here??
i would love to borrow your idea, but i need a little background and a parts list...

PLEASE!!! :bounce3:
the 9v walwart was taken apart so i could solder the 110v to it. it is used to power the cooling fan on the back. and the driver is just a normal meanwell..no dimming...just on/off this is a very basic set up...but it works!

you gota make shure that the heat sink will fit in just right for all this to sit on top of it and still fit in the housing...

cost....i paid like $210 for a 24 led kit from rapidled.com to build my first led...then i took that one apart to build 2 of these. yep that means i have 4 white leds laying around yet...i may build another one of these when i get another driver and some more blues. i had the heat sinks from an old 70w single end halide ballast i had laying around. fans where cheep...housing where $10 each for the whole light...all i needed was the housing and glass with frame.

So I am only on page 10 crackin' up but I had to post this.

I can tell Your a rich reefer!
My living room looks like this periodically. My wife hates me for it, but I don't litter the floor with money like you. Lol.
I'm sure if I did that, it would be gone, and she wouldn't care as much
