Gig la

Success! Nem left the cup last night and is now in the rocks. Just pulled the cup out at lights on. Nem has its foot in a crevice between the rocks. I think it is still moving up. Oh well. Pics and vids after the lights ramp enough to do them.

As far the DD goes. I think their prices are way over the top on some things. But in my position, I don't have a choice. A healthy Mag for 150...no brainer. I do not have a decent LFS a few hundred miles. The only store here we dubbed "the store of death"! People who have no business keeping SW animals in their store. They have very little and what they do have, they are effectively killing. This is why I choose LA so much. I would love to have a decent LFS within an hour or so drive. Not happening lol!

I totally understand. I hear it all the time... "you guys living in California are so spoiled!!!" I really do feel fortunate because even though I live in northern CA, the LFS owners drive down to southern CA to cherry pick, so we really do see a lot of nice stuff. And competition here is crazy -- there are three top notch stores within 20 miles of each other, and all have nice stuff. There is a fourth store that carries lots of fish, many from the Baja area.

However, when it comes to nems, particularly magnifica and gigantea, even here in CA they are often in bad shape. I recently talked to LFS who is now importing directly, and the reports are that the nems are looking A LOT better and the rate of infection is lower.

I was telling Clorox that shipping and collection methods must have changed because I noticed the same thing about the condition of gigs here in SoCal.

Sorry for the crappy vid, my phone camera sux! Once again you get the idea. My hammer and duncans are doing great. My frogspawn is still angry about the move and the zzo's are still grump from a year of neglect! The clowns are still not interested which really isn't a bad thing. The nem is great though! Looking fantastic. Tentacles must be 1 1/2" long now maybe 2. I love it. Cipro did bleach it a bit. Color should come back quick. Hoping it really greens up, but honestly I don't care. Its healthy and doing great!

I think Cipro not only kills the harmful bacteria, but helps the nem to expel the dead zoox, which is a good thing. I also think too much Cipro can cause a nem to bleach, but this is also okay because the zoox population can come back from literally nothing.

If the nem does not respond to Cipro or Septra within a day or two, then I think it will die. There's a very small window for treatment after the nem deflates. If it can't reinflate, it can't take in the Cipro. No med intake = dead nem.

If treatment is to work, like in humans, it needs to be administered for at least 5 days or the bacteria won't be completely eliminated. Again, IME, if the nem remains deflated by day 3, there is a very high likelihood that it won't make it.

+1
That's the same I have experienced. What I also noticed is that some sick gigs aren't, for lack of better words, fully sick, meaning they deflate once or twice, but look relatively healthy. These, I found, are the ones that respond very well to treatment, they perk up nicely after the first or second day and stay always inflated thereafter.
On the other hand, if the gig is limp and deflates on and off and has the 'glassy' look, tentacles are short and sparse around the mouth, that's a sign it won't make it.

LFS concern...mine should be picketed and shut down! Heres a horror story for ya.

Older lady, 65+ goes into said said store and asks to buy a tank. She pays said folks over 4 grand to do this. They set it up for her in 1 day. Beautiful corals, LR, fish, the worx....1 day. No sump, 55 gall tank, T-8 lights, sea clone skimmer....and 2 banded cat sharks! Of course the sharks destroy the tank over night, lady asks them to fix or refund....ALL SALTWATER SALES ARE FINAL....that's the only response she got.

I think my nem was relatively healthy from LA. It did look like death in the bag, UPS was 3 hours late on delivery, temp was cold. But all in all it was pretty good. I feel their was a variable I didn't see though.

No real news to really write about. Nem looks great, seems to be enjoying its new home. Tentacle extension is great with the lights on. Lights of it shortens up. No deflation of any kind. Clowns are still not getting anywhere near it lol. It caught some frozen Mysis and Brine last night at feeding time.
Mother nature is killing me! It was -8 when I woke this morning. Hoping the temp goes up enough for me to get out and about today and see if I can locate some krill or table shrimp to chop up.

On another not, my frogspawn seems to be getting his groove back. 1 head fully open this morning. 2 smaller heads still closed. hoping their still grumpy from the move.

I am not saying that this is wrong. They recover from stress faster with feeding. As soon as I know they are healthy, I start to feed them. I just commented on you trying to go out and get krill and shrimp to chop up and feed.....
Certainly not your anemone :)

Well last night we had 5 degrees and I was out cooking pork chops on the grill. Maybe he is craving some shrimp, just not harlequin.... HAHAHAH

Srry should have explained better. I will take ur advice and not target feed for a while. Srry about the wording.

Worm I don't want to go outside! I was stationed at Fairbanks AK for a while and I am always begging my wife to let me move back! I loved it. Shes always griping, "but its soo cold"....at least you expect it there! lol

Yeah... My 120yo was in PopWarner football here in DC area. He ended up going to nationals a few years ago. We arrived in FL in 50 degrees. We were sweating. Everyone down there was in sweaters and 'heavy' jackets. We were laughing at them and practicing in shorts and t-shirts. I think it scared the other team a bit actually.

Actually I always feed my anemone whe I firt get them into the DT. I think they need it to recover from stress. I think if you don't feed them they will be fine too just recover slower.

@Minh, I haven't target fed, but it does pick a few pieces out of the water when I feed the tank. Still looking good. No clown action yet.

@worm...football is huge for us! My boy is 10 and plays midget league. I also am a coach. We take our kids to "the battle of Rock Top" every year. My sons team placed 3rd in the country down there this year. Runners up last year. I have 7-8 y/o and they got killed! lol Played a team that looked like men from Ohio. 2 kids on that team 8 y/o weighed in over 270! Bad part they were good on there feet as well!

My son was 10 and we went to AYF championships and got 3 overall nationwide for their weight class. Spent like 5 days in Orlando. Now he is 12... and XboX is #1.... :/ that changes over the weekend.. no pone and no xbox... LOL We go OUT!!!

He actually enjoys going out too!

So...

Sounds like things are doing better. GLAD to hear that.

Now what are you going to upgrade next?
