Gimme a hug or kick me

-Forgot to say thanks for the hospitality Kent.

Anyone have suggestions on where to find the carbon fiber rods? The hobby shop I tried today only had hollow plastic rods.
The other one I wanted to try is closed until Sat. I don't know any shops that sell kites either.

Carbon fiber rods can be found at Mark Twain Hobby in St. Charles. A few months back when i was looking for parts locally to Mod my MJ1200 they were the only ones out of about 7~8 stores I called that had them. I did not try any Ill side stores only the MO side of the river.

Sorry I did not make this, I still want to mod my pumps, but question is how well does the mesh hold up over time?

There really isn't any long term testing to verify but we haven't seen anything to worry about there yet. The bubble masters have been running them for a while and there haven't been any issues that I know of there either.

Here are a few pics. don't mind the collection cup.. This is the one I drop a while back on the basement floor and had to glue everything back together  but still works.

I picked up a skimmer from DST a few weeks back, and I went to Kents for the Mesh Mod. I finally piped the skimmer and hooked up the modded genx-6000. I figured I better clean the skimmer with Vinegar and Water first. Here are some picss with just Vinegar and Water running and I have never had a head of Foam like this with my skimmers running salt or cleaning water.

KENT YOU THE MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!! This goes on the tank tomorrow after a night of cleaning.

Yep, that is the one you gave me the other day. I have to figure a way to keep it mounted at the top of the skimmer, if the skimmer stops and the airline is below the water line water comes pooring out of the venturi line.

I have to do that and I have to tape some of my unions I see some small leaks where I had to cap the other recirc skimmer and the outlet union. Minor stuff.

You were right, If I would have used both gen-x with the mesh on this skimmer, this thing would be like crazy.

I think the mod is working very well on my ASM G4X. I just took the following picture about 5 minutes ago. The cup was cleaned just 2 days ago.

I am going to do the gatevalve next and maybe the recric mod after that.

This picture was taken yesterday. I need to clean out the entire skimmer soon.

Recirc it and do the gatevalve and you will be even happier with it. Nice skimmate by the way. :-)

i went from the stand pipe all the way up to all the way down and this is still skimming wet

this is on a euro-reef 8-1 with sedra 5000

I could see with a standpipe configuration that some may need a taller riser tube if the lowest setting still creates too much foam. It probably depends on whether the stock pump/skimmer geometry is close to maximum efficiency.

Alright, well my skimmer is just like Lonnie's and Hobb's only it's a G-3. I have the recirc mod and I'm feeding it with a maxi-jet 1200. I must admit, I've never seen my skimmer crank it out like it is now. Lonnie helped me aqua-scape the 55g yesterday and he sturd every inch of sand until the tank look like the Mississippi, and the skimmer was crazy!!! Thanks Kent!!!

P.S. Oh yes I broke the ceramic rod while modding mine too. But it's still working. And I took your advise Kent and drilled out the air intake tube making it larger on the pump.

I just got around to trying this. Few questions:

How many layers of mesh are you guys using on a Sedra 5000? I modded mine with 3 layers and am not noticing much of a difference. Should I have went with 2?

I also didn't cut all the pins off the needle wheel, I kept about 8 to help keep the mesh in place

Should I bore out the air inlet in the venturi?

I'm running this on a DIY recirculating skimmer.

By the way I have extra mesh if there is anyone else who didn't make it to the meeting and who like to try it.

Thanks, Nick

You only really need 4 of the needles.

You pretty much only want the mesh to be as thick as the impeller was originally.

It would most likely be a great benefit for you to bore out your venturi or put a larger venturi on there with the appropriately sized tubing.
