GIRS Website

Anyone out there want to take a look at the GIRS website to see if they want the job of helping keeping it updated? John has been super busy and has not had time to keep it updated. We really need a few people. I do not know much about it, but I will try to get the answers to any questions you have.

Please only post if you have experience in this area. From what I know he made most of this using Dreamweaver. He said that he would continue to do the graphics for the site but he just does not have the time to write the code. Again, this all means nothing to me so if you want to help out and are qualified, I can get you the information you will need.

Thanks!

I would help with the web site,

I however have not messed with Dreamweaver-

infact most of my Web skills are way out of date. but that has never stopped me ;-)

I have my DEPT of procurement looking in to getting me a copy so I can play with that and keep the editing style the same.

if this works let me know.

My vote would be a to move to a system were you don't need to be a web developer and/or have web developer tools in order to update the site content. Anyone who is in the proper "role" should be able to update the content via a web browser.

I know that we are currently getting a good deal for our hosting, but it can't be worth more than $75.00... That's all it would cost per year to host the site on GoDaddy, where you could easily add all of the content management tools for non-web developers.

I have my website that only cost me a whopping 60 for two years and i OWN the domain. The transfer rates are great...and the amount of space/bandwidth is awesome

Reef Central is a family friendly board that caters to all ages. Please keep that in mind when posting links.

OK so now I really want to know what kind of website you are hosting

lol

Its a gaming clan website. For BAttlefield 2..... we are the 40dds (yeah yeah so my g/f has some dd's) thats where we got the clan name idea from.... any porn on there....ummm no

they cleared that link??? Theres no porn but oh well. ...
do a google search for 40dds and our site will be there

Here are my thoughts...

Thugmebaby....if you are willing to help out we could really use it. I just feel that we would be throwing away all the work that John did if we start over if we don't have to. There probably will come a time when someone will want to redo it.

All we really need is:

Update calander with multiple months
New BOD information
New Featured Tank
New Featured Picture
Members page needs updated

That would get us up to date...then we can go from there.

If/when we can't get any volunteers to help out with the current website format I think then we do a "hard restart" :)

I think it needs to be something easy enough that anyone could do it, we've had so many issues with this for so many years. It would be great if we could update the current page while a new easier to use page was created. I don't see an end to these issues without making it user friendly, we need to be able to update daily if needed. Jason

I really don't think this is the case. The new site looks good and there is no reason why the majority of it wouldn't work perfectly with a more dynamic back end.

Think of the current site like a reallly cool funny car body. All we would be doing would be switching out the car under it and making a few mods so that the body fits the frame.

Okay Bob can you get me pages you need updated so i can look at them... I think between me and my g/f we could handle those requests...

and yes no boobs on the main page.... you should see our server graphic lol.... if you think the page is bad .....

anyways if anyone is into Battlefield 2 feel free to join our server sometime.

I will look at page later on and see the complexity etc etc

Definitely a great idea to make the site easily updateable by anyone. That should definitely be something we should do.

Maybe there is a free tool that can help, or I suppose it can be programmed to be done using php or .net.

Either way I'd agree that it might be nice to move the site to a public server so that apps and databases can be installed onto the server.

I'll also volunteer my services for any help that is needed. I have used dreamweaver before, though that isn't required to update a webpage. It just automates things and saves time.

Yes, there are a ton of free tools for both .NET and PHP. We just need to figure out the hosting situation.

I think Bullet is going to ask the current host a few questions about what type of servers and databases are available at the current host.

Just out of curiosity, who is still interested in helping out with getting the website updated? Any graphics designers/html guru's out there?

If needbe, I can host the site via my server. I have a fullblown server that I do all my other site hosting duties on. It would take a big of work, redirecting the domain name, etc. but it could be done.

Hosting really isn't an issue anymore. GIRS has a GoDaddy account now and I'm working on setting up portal software that will allow any of the officers to easily maintain and add content to the site.

I could just use some help in the Web Design area taking the graphics and html from the existing site and modifying them to work in the portal.
