So I read on a friends page about a program that her reef club does called doont break the chain. Basically people give coral away. not sure of all the details but sounds like a good thing.imo any way I wondered if there was a reef club south of Buffalo and or if there is any program like this around? Or even like a take a coral leave a coral type of thing.

well yeah,There are plenty people here that give coral and all sorts of goods to each other by trade, selling or the kindness off their heart..Most of these people know each other and wile maybe not being "friends" in the true sense, most have talked, met and have seen each other around or have a good posting relationship here ..

Now.. posting three times in nine months,I doubt will get you a free aiptasia let alone coral that costs 100.00's of dollars..Welcome to the club, but you just can not bust down the door and throw out stuff about who is giving away shlt for free..

I think you have a fine idea there, Reefer Buddy. The closest we come to such a thing is occasional frag swaps, usually held at one of our terrific LFS's. There was one in Canandaigua at Salty Dog last weekend. I've read about a "Pay it Forward" thing that some clubs do also. The problem is, it needs someone to organize it, or even just start it.

Second this!

Toddmh, you just don't get it, something like this would be wasted on you. To everyone else thats why I asked aboout any reef clubs that meet in person. Not to sell just to ask questions bs whatever, just a part would be to bring something to give, and take away in return. just a thought

The concept is good. In reality there is a lot of free trading and giving going on, however this is usually after building a relationship. Some folks (including myself) are reluctant initially due to some bad experiences such as our generosity showing up for sale shortly thereafter, and corals vanishing from our tanks. Maybe a few bad seeds ruined it, hard to say.

Personally I prefer to trade. For folks who have been generous with me I don't like money in exchange and will give if there is nothing to trade - this is the product of building a trusting relationship with folks.

I completely agree with this. Every few years we get person talking about doing this pay it forward idea. Its normally a new person looking for frags which is in theory a good idea. I a sure most of the people that have been here a while will agree with me most of us do this kind of behind the scenes. The problem is it just never works out and normally turns into a hassle

There is already a lot of this going on in the club. It doesn't need to be organized. Plus there's something about trying to organize goodwill that seems lame.

This made me, for reals, laugh out loud, aka LOL.

My sentiments will mirror Blurrys. Id consider myself lucky to be know to be as generous as Pascal. To hear of him getting burned and or outright stolen from, sickens me. I too have given stuff away only to see it chopped and sold for profit.

I'm much less open these days. Sorry if this offends the OP, but people will only line up to electively get shoed in the nuts so many times before they start employing the peep hole on their front door.

I'm still laughing.
That's the government's job ;some say.

My house is open to many URS folks once I get to know them a little. By and large it's fine group of folks. But some ,a rare few , are not and would not be welcome in my home.I've thought about organizing and hosting a get together but for now I'd rather keep it to individuals or small group visits from folks I have a chance to get to know.
If someone organizes a coral chain I'd give a frag or two to get it started.

I do get it,this has happened to every good hearted person here..It is always the same.."help out a newbie get started" come to find, most are more greedy than newbie..This may or may not be you,you are a unknown..

I dont care really,My tank is full of corals I love,if I want a new one,I go get it..A grab bag tank idea sounds like a good way to spread pests more than anything..I stick with people I trust and know thanks...

Did you have a bad experience with OP or something Todd???

Just seems a touch harsh for someone who was just asking about something, no?

Re: nuisance pests, you can pick them up ANYWHERE! LFS, local hobbyists and online vendors alike. Obviously if you were concerned you could treat them prophylactically with a dip.

I'd say stick to craigslist to find people willing to trade/sell coral. Many of the people I've found have been very kind, helpful and eager to show me their setup. My first pieces of coral I got for free when I bought T5s from someone on craigslist. I have a whole network of CL people that I keep in touch with. Not all the SW people hang out on reef central. IMO upstate reef society on RC is not always the best place for starters... not a lot of common ground or things to talk about, I do a lot more reading than writing on here.

Some people should just be happy with the advice they are given when asked. Assuming that this free site should lead to free corals is just presumptuous. I appreciate everyone that has helped me get to where I am. I appreciate the guys at the lfs who put their livelihoods in jeopardy so we can maintain our hobby. Buy local. Trade with friends. If you don't have friends- revert to buy local.

Nothing personal with the OP..But for the OP to say..I just dont get it?? Dont get what? His 70 word idea with the whole contex being getting free handouts spells it out pretty well..

Reefer Buddy.."Toddmh, you just don't get it, something like this would be wasted on you"

Really nothing harsh there eh Justin..It would be almost embarrassing to just tell most of the people here that dont know me just how much I have given away "hobby wise" over the past 4 years to people from here..But yeah I don't get it..Like the OP title says, there are Givers here and Takers, sometimes it is all to easy to tell them apart

I didn't read anywhere that he wanted handouts or free things, either way you didn't handle it properly... there goes another new person due to presumptions and a snobby attitude. I'm not afraid to call you out on it ;)
