GlennF's 1500 liter mixed reef tank

These are the ones.
4 of them does the trick.

The key to succes is to use a pond airport with a capacity of 1800liter/hour
The common Aquarium airpump are no good for this purpose
I regulate the excess air bij blowing this off with a bypass controlled with valve.

It just set and forget.
If more skimming is required i just close the valve a little bit tigther.

Sorry to muck up your thread. You've always said to talk with you here.

I got myself a new toy today. I've always loved air stone skimmers as I'm the type that likes to tinker. I've built several but I decided to purchase this one.

It's 8" diameter. An alita 25m to drive it and a maxi jet 1200 for a feed pump. Not sure of the stone but he says its a lifetime stone. Just clean and reuse. I may try wood stones for fun at some point.

Are these still being made and sold?
It looks good though....
I am curious how it will work for you.
I build my technics myself, because I have the freedom to modify anything which is not to my liking.

I like air driven skimmers because they are energy efficient and quite and I can use the extra air on many other tanks.
Once I had 3 skimmer connected to the same pump.

I feed the skimmer with gravity. The return water is partly directed to the skimmer and with a bypass I regulate te stream to the skimmer. On the same bypass in have my uv. So all water get processed by something.
This saves me a pump, on power consumption and heating up of the tank.

This is how I save on technics and energy consumption.
In the US energy and gas is cheaper i suppose and you guy got lots of space.
In Holland we pay 22,5euro cent per kwh for energy and our ground price is up to 500 euro per m2.
So saving in space and energy do pay off in Holland. Live is expensive enough and people need to save on something, otherwise this hobby would only be affordable for the elite.

glennf... If I must say it in two words. thank's and AWESOME!!! You must have ourtime's most awesome reef tank!!! Thank's

Lol. Well, after a few phone calls to reef dynamics and precision marine along with some Google time. I was only able to find this one. I asked to buy just a skimmer body and collection cup from reef dynamics so I could build my own again. This skimmer is from a LFS to me that I recently discovered. They've been around 2 years now and I just heard about them. He builds tanks and himself being an old timer in the hobby has never left the air stone skimmers. When I asked him about them he chuckled and said that him and I must be the only two people left that like air stone skimmers.
I agree about the ability to control them. Each function is seperate and I can make it do whatever I want without sacrificing the other function.
I'm not sure of the conversion rate but, I always figure out any piece of equipment at .12c a KWH. That's our national average. Or at least it used to be??

I've gotta finish my sump and a stand for it. I'm doing an overhead sump for my tank in a closet on the other side of the wall. Since my tank isn't drilled, I'll pump out of the PVC I posted a pic of earlier in your thread. I'm hoping to go straight into the skimmer.

Thanks for your beautiful words.

It's a passion and I make it a habit to put effort in things I love doing.

do you have a tank thread please link me...
ik can't look into your profile, because i have NONE privilage, but reading and postings.

Oh man...... I lost my yellow wrasse. He jumped. I sure miss that fish. I replaced him with a red line wrasse. I also now have a net top on my tank. It helps keep my blue spot jaw fish in as well.

I'm sorry, I don't have a thread. Like I mentioned when I posted pics earlier in your thread. It isn't an awe inspiring tank such as yours. Most of my threads drop off the boards faster then I can post them. Plus I'm not really into talking to myself. Haha. I'd be happy to send you email instead of here. I have your email if it hasn't changed.

Pitty..
That's one of the reasons is keep a closed tank. We loose enough live due to ignorance and other problems, so loosing one this way is just annoying.

A tank is Beautiful for it's keeper.
Inspiration is needed to improve on yourself.
I don't like to talk to myself also, but when you have something to show you have a duty to inspire others (and I mean positive or negative wise) .

Just post it in here, no problem. As long as it's educational I love it. If everybody start sending me email my mailbox will become clogged.
That's why I communicate publicly so others can be inspired.

Very true.

I understand about the mail. Your very kind, Thank You.

I would be nervous using that stand. All weight is transferring to through bolts or nails. Perhaps skinning would strengthen. Most designs have frame rest directly on top of vertical legs / supports and double up on or sandwich two vertical legs. I personally, did the Garf lam-beam approach and stand, very solid.

Congrats on your awesome tank and inhabitants ....

No worries, the stand is solid build, the weight is distributed evenly though the construction and the floor is flat. This construction will be strengthened even more when the side panels are mounted.

So, I'm playing with the new skimmer. Trying a couple different things before I drill the new above tank sump. I was courious how you went about setting your skimmer. Such as, do you set the water height/flow and then adjust the amount of air, or......do you go about it a different way?

I'm gonna pick up a fitting so I can add another stone tomorrow. I'd like more air but just one of my stones won't do it. Bubbles start to get big. However, the one stone does a great job and if my idea doesn't work. The skimmer should perform just fine as is.

water height can be adjusted with a bottomless 110mm PVC pipe, which you cut at you desired length. some water will got through the bottom some over the top, just enough to keep the water in your skimmer leveled.
air is being regulated bij een bypass, when skimmer is foaming to much just open the valve the blow of some excess air.
i believe wooden airstone make finer bubbles than the ceramic (long lasting ) versions.

there is no more isles to be found from the orginal scape
it's now a massive wall of corals growing towards the surface
