Hey, what's your opinion on someone who wants to be very minimal on equipment, and just have a large tank, say 300 gallons like yours, and pretty much only have powerheads, heaters, and lights?
Maybe a skimmer for carbon dosing. No sump, and just manual testing and dosing. Certainly NOT stocked to the gills like your wonderful reef, just some fish and LPS\softies.

I'm comparing this to some of the amazing amount of money people spend on equipment.

I would classify them to be like me.
I spend all my life DIY'ing with my aquariums equipments.
That's what the hobby's about for me.

I do it for my own fun, and i learn a lot.
Not everybody have the patience and knowhow how to.. So they get the best money can buy, just to make sure they succeed.

Some do it just to own a furniture to showoff that they can spend the big bucks and it's their god given right to do so.

Hi Glenn. In order to reduce phosphates, I'm trying to mix my own iron-hydroxide. So far I bought some iron-sulphate (FeSO4*7H2O). Next is to oxidize it (thought of using hydrogen-peroxide for this), then add sodium-hydroxide to it. Formula is something like:
2FeSO4·7H2O + 4NaOH + H2O2 = 2Fe(OH)3 + 2Na2SO4 + 14H2O
Am I on the right path? I know you are not sharing your recipees (too bad in my opinion), thus trying to figure it out by myself. Hopefully somebody more knowledgable in chemistry can confirm or guide me in the right direction. Thanks.

Use randy's formula is close enough...
