Go Big OR Go Home! Construction of a 1000 gallon System!!

Hi bstone....

I run a phosphate reactor 24/7. I got a reefmania fmr-1 with a side input. it is great. it holds a little over 2400grams of phosban type media. and lasts me almost a year. zero phosphates baby!!!! i run the reactor with a maxijet 900. and i still have to dial it back.

if i could get anoher one in my stand i would run carbon also.....

btw... i run two DI carts in series. then when one exhausts i move the good one to the 2nd chamber and install a new one.... i get a longer life out of the cart that way

Any updates

Took a loss on some SPS, but the big colonies are still around. I do not know what caused it, so I made a few changes.

I run carbon 24/7 and change out every month

I run phos 24/7 and change out every quarter

I am know doing a constant 5GPD water change. I bought a dual head Stenner Peristaltic Tube Pump. So, now I will have a constant 5 GPD water change in the tank. So, about 150 gallons per month. I usually do 150 gallons all at once every month, so this will help reduce "shock" to the system by things changing to fast.

I got all new bulbs; Giesemann 14.5 K MEGACHROME coral 400 Watt. I really like these bulbs a lot. Very white with a hint of blue. I also run them with my actinics. Very good color, very good PAR, so far an great bulb!

I bought some new corals to replace the ones that died. But I am very picky now. Only corals that "blow" my mind away are going to be purchased.

The fish are doing great. The Blueline is eating and getting FAT. All the other angels and tangs are doing great also.

I will post some pictures this weekend!

What reactors are you running the phosphate remover and carbon in?

I bought the media reactors from MyReefCreations, but I had to mod them a little. They work great.

It happens to us all. A lot of times it can just be shifts in alkalinity in my system that mess the corals up, but right now I have a brown algae issue that is making a mess of things.

What mods to the MRC media reactors did you do? I just bought a couple of them.

Yeah.....I'm interested as well.....I have three of their largest with no modifications

You mentioned earlier that you were going to add 2 Potter's Angels and a Flame...I think. Have you added these yet? If so what has been your experience with them in the tank together? I am in the process of building and planning to stock a 210 with them and would like to keep more than one. I was hoping that 210 (6ft) is large enough that they won't fight, or at least if I put 3 in at the same time they won't bother each other.

I had a problem with the upper and lower black sponge's not sitting correctly during operation. The water flow would push the lower one up on an angle and by-pass the media, and the upper one would drop down when I turned the water flow off and on. A new sponge might last for a few weeks, depending on your water flow through it. I by no means have a fast flow rate through them, its just that the black sponge does not hold tight and moves easily. So, I cut out a round piece of the white plastic egg-crate stuff (at Lowes and HD used for ceiling lights) and wedged it under both the sponges. It works great and the never have had a problem yet.

I have not done it yet. I actually plan on a few flames, a few potters, and a few flamebacks. I feel that if you add them all at the same time then you would reduce the risk of fighting. I plan on adding them all to my sump and get them eating for about a month then adding them all to the tank. You have a greater chance for success if you get the fish eating in a non threatening environment first before putting them in the main tank.

I have an idea that I would like to get some opinions on. Right now I have my Tunze Streams set up for low flow during the night (Night Mode). But my main recirc pumps still put out a lot of flow. I was thinking of turning one of the main recirc pumps off at night (duration to be determined) to reduce flow even more. The only issue would be the water level in my sumps would increase throwing my level sensor off (upper limit). Meaning that I would evaporate 3 to 4 gallons at night and the top off would not come on. Now, this will not be an issue because 3 to 4 gallons will not increase my salinity at all. And as soon as the other recirc pump kicks on the level sensor will kick on adding the lost water from that night. Or, I could have the main recirc pump come on for 1/2hr in the middle of the night which would give the level sensor time to add water.

All this would be in an effort to reduce water flow at night to help duplicate that in the wild.

Your thoughts?!?!

not a good idea. At night the flow is most likely more then what we have in our tanks even though its nighttime

I have more then 25 feet of head pressure, so one pump will hardly give me flow (refer to graph and curve labled singe pump). Now run you finger across the the 25 foot mark and you will see that one pump will not function at 25 feet of head preassure;

Are you still running the same Sequence pumps in series?
Not trying to bring up painful memories, just wondering!

:D

 Yep, still works GREAT.

It's my understanding that most of the large pumps that we use are made for continuous use...Shutting them down and back on may prematurely wear the pump(s) and I agree with jnarowe - I don't think it worth the hassle or the risk.
