Go Big OR Go Home! Construction of a 1000 gallon System!!

I got lucky! I had angle iron powder coated braces that I siliconed on each corner.

The new tank has aluminum angle siliconed on each corner. The powder coating does not bond well at all with tsilicone.

Can i borrow your fish room/sump/plumming designs..of course i need to win the lotto jack pot first but it will give me something to have some wet dreams about...

I can't believe I missed this thread! You have a beautiful tank and setup my friend. I just spent a good portion of my afternoon just "skimming" through it. I wonder how long it would take to actually read it all the way through.. I did read about your most recent problem with the glass seperating. This is the main reason I bought an acrylic tank. I'm amazed the manufacturer actually stood behind his product, seems like you really lucked out. So if you could do it over again, after seeing what happened to the old glass tank, would you get glass again? That is, if it wasn't warrantied, would you have gone with acrylic to replace the glass? Or in your opinion, do the benefits of glass still outway the risk of a leak or a catastrophic blowout?

YES, I would definitly goto glass again. I had 2 acrylic tanks bust on me!! So, lesser of two evils in my mind. It came down to cleaning. Very easy to clean glass compared to acrylic! Thanks for reading my thread!

i too hate cleaning the acrylic. i too have had two acrylic tanks seperate, fortunately it was the top seam on both. they are both still in use and held together with clamps and braces. soon to come down.

so they are not foolproof either. this one is probably about 10-12 years old. i am the third owner.

Thats what I was thinking jnarowe.... make me nervous with seeing the acrylic bend like that.... would get my living vreatures out of that tank ASAP to fix it

I suppose it is possible to make bad acrylic tanks as well.

Sorry for getting off topic...but that picture of the failing acrylic tank...yikes!

the tank has been repaired with a metal collar that has been holding it for about a year now. it is soon to come down though as i have to move all to the new tank in the house.

here is the repair a buddy of mine made. welded, zinc dipped and then powder coated.

i know, i thought once welded together the seams became as strong as the rest of the tank i guess not. it failed not to long after a move and vigorous cleaning of coraline.

sorry to get the thread off track, or maybe it isn't as they both can fail.

Brian, what has your experience been with the extra large sumps, what benefits do you think you’ve gained, and have there been any draw backs so far?

I am putting together an oversized sump (reservoir) system myself and would like the benefit of your personal experience.

Thanks

All positive! Adds more volume to system, so changes are slower to the water chemistry. Add space for coral fraging. new fish get used to system before main tank. Can keep non-reef safe fish in sumps; Eels, puffers, and other cool stuff. Equipment can be esially managed from a larger sump. I really can not think of any draw backs except space, and large water changes needed. Hope that helps!
