goby vs. mini carpet

I feed using a pipette to help reduce waste and it doesn't take the fish long to figure out that the pipette equals dinner. Today AFTER feeding the fish, I was feeding my mini carpets and half of my neon goby pair got greedy. She swam right into the nem.:eek2:

I was able to grab her by the tail and pull her off, but it wasn't easy. These nems are very sticky. Afterwards, she swam to the back corner of the tank. I got a quick look at her and she had several white marks all along her body. Also, there was a small piece of goby left on the anemone. :( She disappeared almost immediately after that and I haven't seen her since. It's been almost 5 hours and usually she's out all the time.

So what are her chances of surviving? I love these guys and I feel terrible that this has happened.

Pretty good. I had a Yashia goby try to steal some Mysis out of one and got caught. I pulled him out of it and as a thank you he bit my finger. He went missing for a couple of weeks and I had given up on him but he eventually showed up again.

I think they have a weak poison.

Thanks Scott. That gives me some encouragement. Atleast she didn't bite me. lol

Well, I still haven' t seen any signs of her. I hope she's hiding out in her cave, but I can usually see her little nose sticking out when shes in there. I hope she reappears.

In retrospect, they're probabally not the best of tankmates.

I'll keep you guys updated.

Do either of you have pics of these mini carpets? I am interested to see what they look like. Thanks.

Hey Nick, They look like little rhodactus mushrooms.I got mine from scott, they are cool. They get about 1'' to 1 1/2'' across and split pretty often.

Are they readily available? I think I would like to get a couple when I get set back up. What color are they?

Here is my rock full of them.

I just noticed one has made it to my sump. I usually sell them for $25 each. Let me know if you want one. Keep in mind they will catch and eat small fish.

Yeah, I stopped feeding mine because they were getting out of hand. One krill a week will get you a bunch of them in no time.

I will definitely be interested when I get a new tank up and running. How big do they get? Quarter sized? Bigger? Do they damage surrounding coral? They appear to be a mushroom or ricordia mimic. Do they sting these corals? Thanks.

The biggest I have seen are maybe 2in across. Most of mine split around the size of a 0.50 cent piece. I haven't had any problems with them stinging other corals. They don't move around much either. There is a purple digi growing on the mini-nem rock and I have seen them touching zoa. They are very sticky like duct tape (ie S. Tapetum) but don't seem to have a strong poison.

I can get you a few. $25 ea how many you want? I live in Whiteville so I could get them to you this weekend if you want.

I've got two on a small rock that I will sell for $40. I live in Reagan and shouldn't be too far from you.

They will gobble up small fish though. My poor little neon goby has never been seen again. I had a bad feeling when I saw a bit of her left on the nem after I finally got her loose. = (
