going skimmerless on sps

Also you got to be kidding if you think these cups of skimate should be left in the tanks they came from? IMO my tanks are better not having what ever the junk is in those cups.

But it tastes SOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOD!!!

what trace elements, specifically, are said to be removed by skimming?

were these elements skimmed out of the water column, or were they bound in the fish poop, uneaten food, etc. that gets skimmed out of the tank?

i believe a certain amount of fishy poop is good for corals but then once it breaks down to a certain point it needs to be removed
I am sure that sps benefit from it plus trace elements arent really that much of a loss if your doing water changes although I hardly ever do what changes more than once a month on my 65 and i grow sps and lps and softies like crazy although i only have 4 fish lol

it wasnt specified but the author sounded like all the trace elements in the saltwater would be depreived by the skimmer over a short amount of time. i have decieded to get a skimmer anyways. i like the benefit of the insurance. lol

no pun intended but what is the point of constantly having trace elements removed from the tank? and then redosing it, it sounds like the water wont be very stable if stuff is takin out and then put back in. dosing trace elements is going to take way more, in terms of money (buying the elements and what to test them with) and then the constant testing of the tank for fluctuations. no peace of mind. arent u guys the same people that removed the bioballs and biowheels from your tank eventhoguh they worked better than live rock and live sand because they retained nitrates? so what the point of a skimmer if its going to take away valuable trace elements. it sounds like its cheaper and more stable to do religious water changes.
stop trying to convince yourself that not having a skimmer will be ok for an sps tank.. if u wanna keep sps, u cant be poor/cheap.. simple as that.. n dont bring out the whole im only 20yrs old and go to college blah blah blah.. me too! and i have a skimmer, n halides, n this n that.. if u dont wanna run a skimmer n do sps corals, be my guest, but i guarantee you will have more threads on here with the title "why r my sps corals brown **** sticks?'..
the LPS forum is forum is THAAAAAAAT-A-WAY!!

Ever seen a skimmerless tank, talked to someone who ran one?
Perhaps it would be best to let those people talk, instead of speaking for them?

[FWIW, LPS will suffer just as much from elevated nutrient nitrates/phosphates - that's more dependent on being a stony coral vs. particular polyp size]

water changes

water changes

I have been sitting back and reading about one topic that no one really seems to be answering. That is which elements are being removed. In short, most of the good ones. I, however, have a different way of "replacing" them. If you read that RK article on water changes you will read that on a 100 gallon tank that the difference in doing 30 gl once/month vs 1 gallon 30X/month is very small. I personally started doing small 1 gallon/day water changes and love it. It stabalized all of my traces (because I am adding back what I take out), and IMO it is easier than doing large ones. Don't believe me...try it. Mix up the usual 30 gallons. Then simply take out 1 gallon (I use a gallon pitcher) and pour 1 fresh in. It is simple and causes basically no stress on the corals. In fact, you don't even have to heat the water, because the volume % is so small. Read the article, it will convince you.

Oh yeah, GET A SKIMMER!
