Nice find!! Is he going in your 240?

Yep, at 8 inches, I think even my Dwarf Angels will be ok as they are both pretty big. My King Angel is smallest in there, but I'm confident he won't be an issue.

Wow, only 8 inches. That must be one small eel! How large do they get?

Max out at 28 inches I believe, very long lived so it would take about 10 years I suspect to reach that.

That will be a very nice addition to your tank! Make sure to keep your eel well fed, I think my 3ft brazilian dragon ate a 2" damsel already! All my main fish are 4-7" and they tail fan him away, still, eels can be aggressive feeders. Yours being 8" you should be fine though and get him trained well. Post pics when you get him!

BDM is my favorite, I love the one on DD currently but that would be asking for big trouble in my tank. I had a SFE that got over 2 feet in my previous tank and he never bothered any fish, hope this works out the same.

Depends on how quickly you feed him. He'll put on over an inch a month if well-fed (at least mine has been - purchased in October at ~12", now nearing 20").

I agree that it'll get big much sooner than 10 years. Even if sparingly fed I don't think it would take 10 years. When it gets on some size you won't want it to be hungry either, and you'll have to feed normally for sure (not that you should fast a small fish in the first place). I bought one at 16" and in a year it was 24". Eels tend to grow very quickly IME. I think your eel will be at least two feet in 2-3 years, if that.

Still, it's always nice to start with a smaller fish, and this species tends to be mellow anyway. Growing it up with your current fish can only increase your odds of having a successful community. Good luck with it!

I guess this is my understanding and experience with how they grow, I now remember my SFE did grow like a weed from 6 to 18 inches in just over a year, from then he grew extremely slow the next 4 years I had him, barely noticeable, maybe an inch a year. Mark M. made a point that the longer a fishes life expectancy is the longer it will take them to reach maximum/full size, example he guessed my Sohal Tang would grow extremely fast to 8 or 9 inches and then growth would slow down substantially. Eels certainly are very long lived, thus slow to reach full potential size.
