Greenhouse project

Are you using your waste water to water the plants on the other side of the greenhouse. If not, you could get a large tank and store it outside of the greenhouse and use that along with a pump to water the plants. It might not be totally cost effective, but it would be enviro friendly.

Looking good so far, can we see some more full greenhouse shots when you get a chance. Thanks.

I have not had much time lately to work out at the greenhouse because of my schedule, but I did make some time this weekend. With some help, I was able to fire up the water purifier for the first time and fill up a 750-gallon aquaculture system. I was pleasantly surprised that the water coming out of the purifier had a TDS reading of 4.5 down from about 800-900. I could later install a DI tank to get the TDS down to zero, but that is a very low priority considering the TDS is very low as is.

Having a new system full of "good" water really brought out how absolutely horrid my existing system with untreated well water looks. Just to recap, the well water had a TDS of 800-900 and precipitated this gross soggy corn flake material that covers everything. Some of the corals are surviving while some of the others did not fare so well. I plan on moving my livestock from the gross system to the new system and restart the old system with purified water after a thorough cleaning.

On a non-water related note, we finished winterizing the greenhouse, and I can honestly say I have no worries whatsoever that the greenhouse will remain warm in the winter. If there is even a hint of sunlight, the greenhouse heats up to about 90 degrees in a matter of minutes. Our gas furnace at night comes on and maintains the air temperature at about 70 degrees.

what did you have to do to winterize the green house. Do you plan on un wionterizing should we get a mild winter or the freak warming spells in the middle?

Winterizing the greenhouse entailed sealing all the doors, making sure all the polycarbonate sheets were properly caulked, and setting up the gas furnace. Before, there were some air gaps which was not a problem in the summer, but in the winter could be trouble. There really is no need to "unwinterize" the greenhouse because the ventilation panels and the exhaust fan are still on a thermostat. It is highly likely that the greenhouse will be exceptionally hot during a sunny day in the middle of winter. At that time, the exhaust fan will kick on for a few seconds and drop the temperature.

Do you have any new pics of your set-up, and when do you plan to start selling some frags?

I cant remember if this was posted or asked earlier in the thread but I was curious..

Are you going to use any supplemental lighting during the winter season since you sunlight will be reduced a bit?

I wish I could give a concrete date and time for opening shop. There are still a few variables I want to iron out before I would be comfortable. The last thing I want to do is open before I am really ready to do so and suddenly have nothing to sell. I think in an ideal world, I would be open before the end of this year, however it seems like with this project, the only constant is delay.

I don't plan on using any supplemental light this winter. It is already November, and it is still very bright at the greenhouse. So bright that I have to shade the corals. Most of the corals are looking a little bleached, and I think that may be as a result of overexposure. In the dead of winter, I think I will be able to simply remove all the shade cloths to give the corals more light. It is something I will have to play with, and I will be taking light meter readings all winter.

Nick,, I think he is hosting the pics on his personal machine and only available when its online.. I may be wrong though..

Looks like it is http://www.shrugsoft.com. I guess the domain could be parked while the host is offline or something...

If it is going to be offline for a long time (or moving for a long time) I hope he will put the pics someplace else in the mean time. I am really excited to see the new pics. :-)

Sorry about the missing pics, folks. I'm the guy running shrugsoft.com and I moved the domain to another server. The pics should be back up as soon as the DNS changes propagate.

dendronepthya,
Now that I can see the pics, (thank you Skidge) I see that your water return looks like grey pipe. Is this grey pvc, cpvc or something else? If something else, why?

4Texans,
I am not 100% sure what you are referring to. I'm pretty certain I am not using gray PVC for anything at the greenhouse. All the pipe I can think of is the regular white PVC.
