Guide to setup a Quarantine Tank (QT).

well i threw in a shrimp lastnight and just tested and ammonia was .25, nitrite 0, nitrate 0

so i guess it hadn't started the cycle before adn the shrimp kickstarted the cycle correct?

yes i would leave the shrimp in the tank for atleast few days and keep checking ammonia daily. if it continues to rise then tank didnt cycle but if it doesnt that means its ready once it back to 0 in few days.

guys i just wanna add on to the conversation. having filters in sump or DT is no guarantee for instant cycle but in fact just a seeding process. its similar to setting up a tank with dry rock and adding a few pieces of live rock to it.
of course the longer the filters sit in the DT chances are more bacteria will colonize it and then again there are many factors involved with that too. bacteria can only live in numbers against the ammonia being produce. its equal proportion. if ur DT produced just enough ammonia for ur main bacteria to live off then chances are ur filters for qt will never colonize thus not giving u instant cycle. so there are many factors at play.
what i recommend is longer the filter stay in ur Dt chances are greater but still after transfer add food to QT and check for ammonia. also dont put a huge load on ur young filters they wont be able to handle it. go slow add 1 fish a week.

Today is first day i have my QT at hypo. Powder brown still doing great with no signs of anything. I started bringing it down Friday and slowly got to 1.0085 today.

nice :) i am happy for you and happy to know everything is running smooth.
just hold 1.009 for 4-6 weeks then start raising it up to match dt.
Good luck and safe reefing.

Does it need to be for that long since he has never displayed any ich and this is just a preventative treatment? I have read that Hypo will kill ich in 2 weeks. This of course assuming he does not breakout with anything during these first 2 weeks.

True but we dont know if hes got ick or not. So in such case when I am not sure I consider same time in prevention as it was observation. So to observe ich time frame is 8 weeks in qt. Hypo as prevention I would do min 3 weeks then 2 weeks observation. Just my 2 cents.

hey bnumair so i tested my QT tank today and ammonia is up to .75ppm now and nitrite still at 0 so i'm guess the tank didn't cycle? what should i do now?

Thanks again for all the help you do

looks like ur tank is still cycling and i would wait it out till u see nitrites spike and come down to 0 so does ammonia. once thats done then ur tank will be ready for fish.

ok so it's still going to do it's cycle just won't go as quick as i was hoping with the filters in the sump? just let it run it's course like normal?

i would run the QT as is now and let it cycle. my professional guess is that ur filter never really got colonized by bacteria. and that can be due to reasons stated above.
let is cycle normally and it should be couple of weeks before its ready.
good luck and keep me posted.

Alright sounds good thanks again for all you do is a huge and helpful information! One last ? Can I take the shrimp out soon cause it stinks! Lol

bnumair, posted this in the main forum but no replies as of yet. This appeared on my yellow fin fairy wrasse today. He's eating well and acts normal. Is this ich?

pics are blurry but i am assuming its Lymphocystis Virus.
virus will reside on the skin for 4 weeks then fall off. it has no cure. death is usually rare with this virus and usually fish recover on its own.
keep this fish by itself it can be contagious.

Note: its definetely not ich, try posting this in fish disease forum and u may get more replies but my guess is stated above.

Hi Bnumair,
i have a two part question.
I know it was mentioned somewhere but I can't find it.
How do you quarentine Angels?Don't handle copper well?
Im thinking about my next canidates and a Lamarck Angel is on my list.
Also, if Tangs are prone to ich would it be bad idea to treat first with Cupramine then with prazipro?
Thank you for all your effort responding to all questions.
My QT is finally working out.

awesome, i am happy to hear ur QT progress.
i would run hypo on angels. they can handle cupramine but are very sensitive and for someone that has not a whole lot experience with QT and copper i would not recommend cupramine.
u can run hypo on angel and tangs both together. also prazipro and cuparmine can be run together too with no ill effects but its best not to.
i recommend prazi first as fish is new and scared and stressed in its new tank prazi does not add on to any stress but copper does so 2 weeks into QTfish is used to tank less stress and stuff then u can subject it to copper.
hope its helps :)
good luck and safe reefing.

Appreciate the summary. Follow-up question regarding adding fish to the QT. If you do the one fish per week to mitigate the load, do you Prazipro for that entire time and then once you add your final one, go two weeks from that point and then start Cupramine, if needed, at that point?

u can prazipro the entire time it wont hurt anything and once u have all the fish in there u can do water change and start cupramine.
first fish first week then u can add a couple in next week and another 1-3 small fish few days after. just not too many at once in the first week after cycle.
prazipro is effective as a bath (15-20min according to manufacturer) we just run it for a week or 2 as preventive and as it has no ill effects for long term.
