Guide to setup a Quarantine Tank (QT).

Thank you,
29g cube will work but they seem to run a bit on the hot side due to the lights and heat entrapped in them. if u can keep the temp under control then go ahead.

hi bnumair,

Got a question on my QT. i'm showing 0.25 ammonia and .05 nitrite, i'm guessing the filter that was sitting in my sump wasnt enough for it. I did a 50% water change last Sunday and just did another 40% change today. Is it going through cycle? My cardinal fish is still hanging in there...

yes u guessed it right. i would do water changes or use prime or amquel and keep ammonia at 0. it should pass very soon as the filters were established.
ghost feed for few days after bringing in the filters to make sure there is no ammonia then u can add a small fish.
but i think u will be fine. have u checked the ammonia kit against freshly made saltwater. sometimes those API kits can show a little bit even though there is nothing there.

I actually have a cardinal fish in there for about 10 days now. I have been feeding him daily. You may be right about those API tests because I have salifert test kit that showed 0 when I tried yesterday. Would it be okay to quarantine a tang in there now?

I am more comfortable with salifert results over API. If salifert is showing 0 then yes its time to add on a tang.

Ur right nitrite at 0.05 is hardly any nitrite at all. Plus marine fish can take nitrite better than ammonia. A decent water change can take care of that or prime just to be on very safe side.

Wish me luck, my QT is the home now of a beautiful powder brown. Ammonia is zero but I added a dose of Prime for the nitrite just to be safe. In a couple of days will start Prazi-pro

Good luck and keep me posted..... any plans for preventive treatment for ich after prazi?

Started prazi pro today, did one teaspon for 20 gallons. Powder brown is eating and seems to be doing fine. Now do i leave everything as is for 7 days? What happens if i detect some ammonia...should I do a water change even though i've dosed Prazi or just add Prime to the water? No ammonia today which is good.

if there is no ammonia then u should be good for now as long as u dont break the cycle somehow. keep prazi in there for 7 days. if for any reason ammonia show up u do water change and redose prazi in same ratio.
say u had ammonia and changes 30% water then dose 30% of the original amount of prazipro back in.
but i very seriously doubt u u will run into ammonia issue any more.

Ok thanks, i will keep u posted on progress...

Hi bnumair,
Finally have my first QT running with first round of fish.I have already treated with prazipro and almost at full copper dosage.
It is a 20g,using twin bio wheel hob filter, with 2 powerhead driven box floss filled filters(diy).
I was going to remove floss at end of treatment and replace with ceramic media.
Once QT is treated with copper, does the ceramic media ever need to be changed?
I'm under the impression that it does not absorb copper but floss will and need to be replaced.

I have never changed ceramic rings in my qt's and they dont get effected by cupramine. I always run carbon and cuprasorb after treatment and always register 0 on my high dollar Milwaukee copper meter.
Good luck and safe reefing.

Another easy ammonia removal trick is to tie a rough screen to an airstone so the bubbles go up the screen, and set it in the tank next to the glass, and shine a 3 watt CFL bulb through the glass on it.

The screen will grow algae, and the favorite food of algae is ammonia.

good tip and thank you for chiming in :)
