Guide to setup a Quarantine Tank (QT).

hi Tassod,
it is 250mg per 10 gal for 5 days. it will not hurt anything else in the system but after 5 days do a water change 50% and then few days later another 50%. keep lights off during the 5 day treatment as it will break the med down.

Just to be sure, is it 250mg / 10gal Daily for 5 days?

yes it is 250mg per 10 gal of water daily for 5 days, but i just checked my notes its 25-50% water change daily few hours after treatment.

Lol yes. It's really mentioned to be a dip everyday. If put in such a big tank it will take a lot to make it work.
Best u get a 10g tank or 5 gal bucket and dip the fish there daily for 5 days.

Bacterial bloom is done. Tank is crystal clear again, but now I am back where I started and with a question. How do you keep bacteria going in an empty QT? I am keeping this up and running until my tank is stocked, but it has been empty for over a month now, and may be empty for another month. Is it uncycled?

  1. 10g tank
  2. AQ powerfilter with biorings and sponge, jumpstarted with biospira. (Handled my first fish like a champ. Has carbon in it now, but not for long)
  3. Heater (79*)
  4. powerhead with aeration.
  5. light

yes ghost feeding is one way or have a permanent resident fish in the tank like a PJ cardinal.

Bnumair,

The purple tang that I added to the QT 10 days ago has been looking like this for the past 4 days or so

Salinity has been steady at 1.008. Could this be velvet? He does not display any symptoms though, he swims normally, eats like a pig and has never scratched on anything. All other fish are healthy and eating great. The flame angel that had the pop-eye is fine now, it just went away on its own although i did dose PraziPro for 7 days.

pop eye usually do fix itself. so i am glad to hear that. velvet on other hand is deadly and can wipe entire tank fast sometimes in matter of hours. hard to tell with blurry pic but if fish is eating and acting fine i would continue with hyposalinity and hope for best.
the only cure for velvet is copper or chloroquine diphosphate. but my guess is if it was velvet ur fish would have already passed away.
you can try copper if you wanna switch gears.

No I don't really want to go the copper route, but I've done some reading on another thread about CP or chloroquine diphosphate and find it very interesting. Wouldn't that kill ich or velvet or anything else? If so, how do i get a hold of this?

yes CP will kill ich and velvet honestly its still in earlier stages of being practiced and truly i have not yet tried it and if i remember correctly its hard to find. Sorry its something i have not tried so i dont wanna lead you in wrong direction. but there are few threads here on RC with people that have tried it hopefully that can help.
like i said in your case it probably is ich and not velvet which hypo should take care of.

I have a question about seeding a filter sponge/pad for a QT tank.

I don't have a sump/overflow to hide it in my display tank, so I was thinking would it be alright to maybe attach it to a veggie clip, and just let it hang in the corner of my DT somewhere?

Or would it be alright to put it inside my skimmer? I have a tunze DOC 9016 inside my aquarium, so there should be adequate water flow inside of it.

Also, does the sponge/pad have to be touching the sand/live rock as well? or will it seed fine if it's simply just "floating" in the water and only touching the side of the aquarium, or only floating inside the skimmer?

I hope I've made enough sense, thanks for all your replies.

Okay, I'll have to check if the flow inside my skimmer is sufficient, but having a small piece of filter pad inside the skimmer shouldn't hinder it's performance, should it?

I'd rather not have the pad out in the open in the display tank, I think it'll be somewhat of an eyesore, lol. Unless I tell everyone it's a rare and exotic coral...

i rather not place anything inside the skimmer as any object inside the skimmer chamber will cause it to not function properly, and on the other hand i find no reason to have a skimmer on a QT so its really your choice.
as long as the seeded media is in the tank anywhere in the water body win high flow area it should function just fine. it does not need to touch rock or sand or anything.
Sorry i replied earlier off my phone while i was at work and couldnt explain it in detail.
I hope this explanation answers your concerns.

Oh I see, that clears is up a lot better, thank you.

Yeah I'm not going to have a skimmer in my QT, I have an aqueon quiet flow for that. I meant seeding the pad by putting it inside the skimmer on my main tank, but as you've mentioned that's not a good idea.

Due to the setup of my aquarium, which is an "inside the wall" look, I don't have space around the sides to run the aqueon filter, and seed the filter pad that way, which would have been the best choice. So instead I'm going to opt for hanging it near my powerhead using a veggie clip, and hopefully that'll work out --> although my snails will have access to it that way, will they have an affect on seeding the filter pad?

Either that, or I'm still considering the "no cycle" QT tank, as outlined by sk8r. I have used it before, with success, but I'm just trying to consider that daily water changes might be a bit harder to keep up with this time around, since my schedule is a bit busier than last time I tried it.

Thanks for all your replies, much appreciated.

i see, if water changes are not an issue and you can have a lot of water ready then un-cycled qt can be achieved with success but just like u mentioned most people get busy in their lives and daily work routine and poor tank its livestock suffers.
anyways you can place the filter pad in the main tank anywhere, hidden behind rock or on a veggi clip either way over time it will have bacteria growing on it. CUC will not hurt it even if they crawl over it.
Placing/restricting skimmer is never a good idea as it need full flow of water and air to push the debris/organics up and over to overflow chamber and any object inside the chamber will restrict that effect.

I'm heading to home depot tomorrow to purchase pvc elbows for my qt and tt buckets. I also need to get some type of cover for the tank/buckets (especially since they are wrasses), I know I've read to use "egg crates" but I seriously have no idea what is meant by that; is it reffering to flourescent light covers? Is there an alternative that is recommended or is that the best option? Cheaper is always better here

Also, should I do the TT for the wrasses (a carpenter flasher and a red velvet fairy wrasse) by keeping them together or should I give them each their own bucket?

"Egg crate" is found in the fluorescent lighting section. Comes in white (or sometimes black) sheets and you typically see it in kitchen or industrial ceiling lighting. The other thing you could use as a cover is screening like what you have on your home windows. I used coated aluminum on the edging and some clear plastic mesh (vs black that is more common on homes) I found at BRS. Look around and you can find some 1/4" mesh that would suit your purpose vs the smaller stuff that is meant to keep out flies. If you're only putting in on the buckets temporarily and don't care about the look, IMO, the screening would work fine and you wouldn't have to even put the hard edges on it -- just drape it over and you're done -- and it's probably cheaper than a sheet of the egg crate stuff that will run you over $10 if I remember last time I looked at Home Depot.
