My 1st. specimens well back in 1999 when I 1st saw that fish.I placed him in one of the softies tank in the store dominated in xenias occasinally he would nip at the polyp but he would rather look for another source of food which is aptasia.Clean that whole tank , and I move him to another. I kept him for almost 8 mo. I believe and died. When I move to another location I bought 3 , one I placed at my home tank a juvinile 1 1/2" mistake, coz he would go after my Millies. he mistaken it for tiny aptasia. lasted 2 mo. my Zebrasomas killed it. I drop another this time 4", man great wiped out all aptasia in the tank ,still the damm tangs boss him around, finally gave up. Until this time the tank are aptasia free. He did a pretty good job before he died. The one at the store lasted over a yr. I rent it to one the reefer here but never made it back. Sucks! Well thats my experience w/ this fish. Everytime I see this fish at the distributor almost all of it would end up in my tanks. They are cheap and effective. Menard: how many of these have you observed, and for how long? I ask, because my experience with Caribbean tangs and butterflys is, well abysmal. And as I ask around, peeps with lots of experience, some who used to be on RC and are no more, and some who have never been here but whom I respect (ex, Fenner) report similar experiences. I almost went for a "Reef Butterfly" a.k.a. Chaetodon Sedantarius (IIRC) and bailed because of multiple reports that they don't survive well in captivity.
Just wondering what your "sample size" is.
Dont make the same mistake like i did. Do not put juvi. in your tank, they will attack hairy acros. 4" or bigger is safe. I have 2 in my mixed display tank Acro. and all no problem . Is just that Cappanella :sad1: must be the smell. taste idono.Originally posted by yznhmr
