Gyre pump

Been seeing reports of this pump being noisy, but it seems most of the come from other countries like Canada, England, China. Ones from US always say it is silent. Hopefully it will be silent for you as well.

Wow, it is incredible how much water movement this causes! I have an ORA pink birdsnest about half the size of a basketball at the very top of my tank. It has been there for 3 years (small frag in beginning) and I have fragged it for years. After 3 hours of flow from the Gyre the darn coral broke free from the rock and rocks back and forth. That is ridiculous for such an established colony to break at the base from water flow from a powerhead.

Initial thoughts were that the controller wasn't as straight forward as I would like. I am very comfortable with Ecotech's controller so it took a little time to get used to Maxspect.

I am running in alternating mode on 4 hour intervals. I don't know if the corals like the break or not. I will play with all the settings and see how it goes. My intention was to buy one or two of these and sell the vortechs but now I am thinking I will run this in alternate mode on 12 hour shifts and keep my vortechs on reef crest. Maybe run the vortechs for a portion of the day. I don't know to be honest.

Another amazing attribute of the the pump is where you can place it. I have it about 2 inches from the water surface. You can't do that with vortechs. Having the pump this high pretty much makes it invisible in the tank to me. It is much more streamlined that the vortechs.

Here are a few different angles of the new pump. As you can see the pump is wider than the mp60 but doesn't jut out as far into the tank.

If anyone wants to stop and take a look at the pump let me know. I am definitely getting the smaller one in Jan for my frag tank.

Any comments on the noise? I'm guessing it's fairly silent since you did not mention any issues with that.

Ability to place it higher up is definitely great to make it less intrusive. Imagine this is due to the design where the water is sucked in only from the bottom, unlike normal pumps that intake from all sides causing vortex if too close to the surface.

Colonies falling I supposed might be an issue for established tanks, in newer ones perhaps they would grow in such a way that the base would be stronger or something *shrug* !

Another question I have, how is the wiring setup? is there a long wire that runs from the powerhead that then connects to power/controller or is the controller has to be located fairly close?

Reason I ask is that in my setup I would have to run it about 7 feet at least, more likely 10 to get the controller inside the stand.

Thanks

Guess will find out soon enough, just placed an order with Aquarium Specialty. Did not need the pre-order code or anything and it should be shipped today. With them being fairly close I hope I should get it pretty quick :)

Do you think I should get this one or wait for the smaller model for a 60x24x12 barebottom, shallow SPS reef?

From reading about it... You would not be able to use it at anything near full power most likely. But you have a 5' tank so I think this version would fit you well. Plus smaller version would be less wide, thus would not cover your 24" width as well.

Would say smaller version would be more suited for less than 2' wide tanks and possibly under 4' long.

There is some sound if you put your ear to the outside of the tank. I don't hear it at all with my tank running.

The design doesn't not pull only from the bottom. If the pump is running in reverse mode the water is pulled from the front and pushed downwards. Either way the design appears to have had pump placement in mind because being this close to the surface is perfect for me.

I wouldn't recommend the smaller one. A 60" run will be fine especially because you mentioned barebottom tank. If there is any issue with the water flow you can turn down the pump. If you ever move to a taller tank then you can turn it back up.

Here's user manual for it http://blog.coralvue.com/download/7596/
From what I can see it can pulse (looks like just in forward direction) or switch back and forth between directions. It should be eventually controllable with Apex, so that should add a lot more variation I would hope. Only not sure how the reverse flow will be done as right now it is all about turning the pump to a certain percent in 0-100% range.

How is it when you mount it vertically. I ordered one today having in mind I will place it in one of the back corners of the tank.

Pete, with the initial controller there is no reef crest or else type mode. My thoughts on this are that the pump has always been intended to create a gyre effect. Reef crest/Else modes on competing controllers have no intent of creating a gyre but rather create disruption. The market might drive Maxspect to offer this functionality but I don't believe it was ever a thought.

There is supposed to be an advanced controller option in the future and also connectivity to other controllers like Apex.

I haven't mounted it vertically and probably won't have a chance before you receive yours. From what I have read online it works just fine. The mfg has offered that as an optional mounting direction.
