Gyre pump

I moved the forward speed down to 50% till I can get some epoxy to help hold down that colony. Reverse speed is 100%. Still playing with it though.

I have been playing with one since yesterday Morning and the amount of water movement that this thing create is outstanding.
I have it on the pulsing modes 100% and reverse mode 50%, and it has move tons of detritus , that the 2 MP 40's were there, never got it out, also the sand is white as new.
One unit on a 8 feet tank

This makes me want one. Has it eliminated your dead spots?

I have to admit that is on a FOWLR tank, but is one unit the flow is so spread that I have no doubts,, that will be no dead spots
Also the look of it is way superior than any I ever seen, besides the Sea swirls, that usually are mounted on the back of tanks, even the outside magnet is minimum
For $299.00 no brainner

only 2 mp40's on an 8ft tank :deadhorse:

I wouldn't recommend the smaller one. A 60" run will be fine especially because you mentioned barebottom tank. If there is any issue with the water flow you can turn down the pump. If you ever move to a taller tank then you can turn it back up.

Ok thanks for your input! :)

Ed,
When can I stop by? I have the pending goodies sitting in my car, just crazy stupid work hrs limiting a most needed visit...

I have a 180 that. Dossnt have alot of rock in the display i hooked my gyre up today but i find that 3/4 way across it looses flow i dont have much flow on thw one side compared to the other. Im running it about 80% 5' tank it would be perfect for maybe im the only one that feels this way maybe i have to play with settings a lil but as foe noise its quiet i am from canada aswell lol. Wicked build and deaign over all bi really am happy with it dont regret the purchase at all

Got my pump about 30 minutes ago.

Overall seems to be decently made, I would say B class components. Price around $150-200 would be better suited. Of course I do not really agree with Tunze or Vortech prices as well :)

One potential issue out of the box for some is a short cable from the pump to the controller. Did not measure it exactly, but I would say it is around 6 feet long. In my case I mount it on right side of 180g tank and have to run it full length of the tank and then down the left side to get into the sump. cord can barely make it to the other side, shy about 5". Obviously this is not a good place to plop a controller so will have to figure something else out. Either some sort of extension cord or drill a whole in the back of the stand so I could just run it straight down into the sump area.

As far as noise goes, I would say it is fairly loud above 60-70%. My tank is not super quite, but I can hear the hum coming from the powerhead fairly easy. Perhaps that will break in, however manual says that they come pre-broken in :) so will see about that. In either case, if you plan to run it at constant speed or in pulse/alternating mode with fairly large delta this should not be very bothersome for most people. With short pulses change in sound from off to on become rather noticeable and will likely upset most users.

Flow. It does move a fair amount of water, especially at higher speeds, but it breaks off around 4-5' mark. There is still movement all the way on the other end of 6' tank, but it is definitely much slower. I will leave two Tunze 6095s on that side for now. Pulsing mode seems potentially nice, although you lose a lot of flow here especially at lower deltas as water is pushed for a short amount of time and doesn't make that far, plus noise issue becomes more apparent. Alternate flow mode may be more useful with a better controller that could set individual intervals for forward and reverse modes. As it is, reverse mode is rather weak and blasts corals right under the pump, so at least in my setup it would not work. For now I'm just using constant flow with some variation provided by two tunzes on the opposite side.

Controller is pretty basic, but easy to use. Set up was straightforward. Press cycle button to switch between 4 modes (Constant, Pulse, Alternate, Feed). In each press settings button to change values, for modes with multiple settings pressing button again moves you to the next variable. Settings are however very basic. In constant mode you can select from one of the 10 or so speeds, In pulse you select speed and time (same time for on and off, so on 1 sec, off 0.5 sec is not possible), same in alternate mode. Not sure how feed mode works as far as going back to normal operation as of yet, but you have to cycle through the modes to get to it as it is not a separate button. Overall the controller should be ok for now, but Apex connection would definitely be welcome in the future.

If anyone still wants a Gyre, Salty Supply still has a few in stock. You can stop by and pick it up instead of shipping and waiting.

Summer now ehh, heard was supposed to be sooner. Well maybe someone will come up with some sort of DIY solution for it.

Thanks for the detailed review!

Went back to the tank to install this thing properly. Had to drill a hole in the back of the stand, but got the cable running in there now at least.

I've tilted the cages on the pump up some and that seem to have increased the flow a bit. Could see detritus being kicked up on the other side of the tank and dragged towards the powerhead. Rest of the flow I've adjusted to not fight the gyre as much with single tunze 6095 mostly doing long on off schedule.

I just left Salty Supply and they have it installed on their 8ft FOWLR tank. They had it on 80% and it was sucking sand from the bottom on pulse mode. It was pushing water all the way to the other side of the tank and out moving the MP60 on the other side running reef crest. I also didn't hear what I would consider to much hum or noise.

I'm extremely impressed with it!

Noise is seem to be going down a bit on my pump, so that should not be an issue after a while.

Flow wise, seems to be doing well, except for about a foot right in front of the pump. That area is pretty quite during normal flow, reverse flow helps here some, but I do not like using it too much since then rest of the tank ends up without much flow heh. Pulse mode brings a bit more movements in front of the pump, this could also be adjusted with rotating flow cages differently, so I may find a better position for them. So far it seems that they need to be pointed a bit up to push water to the other end of the tank.

How close to the water line is the gyre mounted. I haven't tried adjusting the angles yet but have my pump almost at the top, an inch or two from the top. Water flows across the 6ft run really well. I have it mounted on the same side as my mp60 though with the mp40 on the other side of the tank. I like alternate mode so far.

I posted video of it in my tank thread you can check it out, but it's fairly close. Basically as high as I could without splashing becoming an issue since it spits out water a bit up, initially i had those solid lines on cages to be in the middle of the logo if that makes sense, but flow on the other side of the tank was minimal. I rotated them up a bit (a tick or something) and that improved things greatly on the opposite side, however right by the pump acros are fairly motionless.
