h&s recomendation

So with all the hype I am curious and may try an h&s skimmer. I would not order a deltec after reading some of the obnoxious comments from their US rep. He has quit attitude in some of his posts plus as far as I can tell H&S is the same quality and much cheaper.

Here is my question/problem I have height contrants onwhere I could put the skimmer. Are there any good options for my 300 gallon tank with a maximum height of the unit being about 28.5 inches? I want to overskim as much as possible and want the biggest unit I could get for the space. can someone recomend a unit and the best place to get on? Thanks for any suggestions.

imbuggin, brian at www.finsreef.com is who you want to talk to about applications. i am guessing he would recommend the a200-2x1260 if it will fit. you don't need a whole lot of clearance to take the cup off.

Hay guys is there much different between Aqua-Bee 2000 and 2001 pumps? Reliability wise?

So the HS A150-F2001 is the same as a Deltec APF600?
Can I buy the A150 with an Eheim pump instead?

For those who bought new H&S skimmers couple quastions:
1. How do they come packaged (factory boxes? os some other box with popcorn in it)?
2. Should I be getting manual with this skimmer?

thanks

thanks

thanks all. Talked to them they were great and will customize any unit I want for a small and very reasonable fee. Looks like I may join the club soon.

Did you buy the skimmer new? If so, it may have to go thru breakin where the manufacturing plastics may have residue that inhibits skimming - this is a widely known process if you do research on skimmer breakin. Don't ask me why it skimmed at first - wet, but skimmate. The skimmer is rated higher than your tank and you may not have that much orangics - you said you cleaned the rock well, maybe the skimmer pulled most of what it could and is goiong into further breakin

Was your rock live rock? cured or not cured? It looks really clean - if it was cured then after a while the skimmer will produce. If it was uncured the skimmer will probably start producing even sooner.

If it had been sitting dry for ages, and then you washed it and put it in, I would not expect hardly any skimming

If it was live rock (not dried out) why are you putting shrimp or scallops in - the cycle already has enough to get going your just polluting the water more than need be.

If your skimmer was producing, and then not - what did you do - did you put some kind of treatment in the tank, did you have your hands in the tank arranging rocks - when I put my hands in, it really effect the skimmer skimming for a couple of hours and certain other additives will do the same including food. and maybe whatever else you put in there to get the cycle going (until it starts decomposing)

One thing - if you put your hands in or add stuff that makes the skimmer quit producing - it is only temporarily and if you set your level higher and go to work - you may come back to a mess as the skimmer will start producing and overflow - be careful about this - never adjust the skimmer after you or whatever causes the skimmer to stop producing - and leave it.

Lastly - have patience - new skimmers sometimes take a week to get going properly - sometimes longer -

they come in factory boxes inside another box with packing material.

1. skimmer is brand spankin new.
2. rock is base rock from www.reeferrocks.com it is very clean like i said the only thing that has come out of them so far is sand. i am also going bare bottom so there is no substrate.
3. the scallop is in there because i believe my tank was very sterile, need to start the ammonia cycle some how.
4. i now believe the skimmer went nuts at first because of the expoxy putty i used to secure some of the rocks. i have now read that this will cause a skimmer to go nuts.
5. it is now producing a little bit the scallop isn't quite rotting yet.

i believe i just have "sterile new tank syndrome" if you will, i am pretty sure there aren't much for DOC's in my water. this skimmer looks like it will more than keep up with my tank.

it all sounds good - happy cycling!

H&S vs Deltec

H&S vs Deltec

It seams to me there is vey little difference between the H&S A200-1260 and the Deltec 851.

Same pump, although it seams we'll never have a definitive answer on to what degree either manufacturer modifies either pump.

Almost identical physical characteristics and overall size.

Slightly different bracing on the H&S, which possibly could play a role, but who's beating up thier skimmer anyway.

Reliable testimonials from users that they both skim great.

From what I can tell, the Deltec is slightly more expensive $35, but does have a built in drain on it's cup, which can be a nice feature if your skimming wet.

Both distributers have good customer service.

Is this really a flip of the coin or does anybody have anything substantial to add that might sway my bubble filled head one way or the other.

MGB, there's a new H&S/Finsreef forum here.

In answer to your question, you just have to decide which is best for your needs, budget, etc. I have both and feel they are equal in performance. I think Deltec may be a bit more innovative in their product line in that they have the Turbo Line of skimmers and offer the Self Cleaning Head for the larger skimmers. H&S is slightly better in terms of material/build quality.

Hope this helps, Geary

For those with external skimmers, how do you feed the skimmers? Do you use pump or is it fed from overflow. I just got H&S External A300-3x1260 and was wondering what would be the best way to feed this skimmer? Thanks to all.

Is all depends if you have enough pressure to gravity feed it from your overflow if the tank is a lot higher than the skimmer and you can put the 800 GPH in to the skimmer that will be the best way if not, a nice 1262 Eheim pump will do the job.

wow that is service

wow that is service

Wow talk about customer service. I ask one question here on the thread about if I need to drill my own drain in the collection cup. Not only does someone (random) quickly answer my question. BUT I get a PM from Brian who said he will drill it free before he sends it out. Thank god I didn't buy a deltec and deal with the attitude over there. I am very confident I made the correct purchase!!!

Re: wow that is service

they skim nicely too - smart I think to get the drain - the other side being people will swear it will keep you from cleaning enough the neck for optimal skimming - the otherside and more important perhaps is coming home to algae going sexual causing your skimmer to go nuts dumping all over your floor
