Hair Algae Solution That Worked For Me

I saw this in an LFS I was in today and looked at the bottle and it had lots of warnings about getting it on your hands and eyes etc. I think it'd be very interesting to try experimentally but I can't bring myself to use it in my reef. Algae isn't that bad when you keep on your WC except for invasive strains. However I am very curious to see more results and pictures in this thread.

I couldn't tell from the chemicals in it if it is just an algaecide thats killing the algae (seems maybe its this way from previous posts) or if its somehow attacking the cause of the algae?

chrisstie........

I have been following this from the start and haven't used it yet, actually I'm not having any alge outbreaks @ this time, but there's always another day when I might.

The fact that API calls this product an "Algaecide" is remarkable...why? well in the good ole days no problem calling product that, BUT now it's a whole game...Fed and States require if you make that designation the manufacture MUST comply with a series of very tough requirements to protect the in user and of course the environment ...and must be tested very completly and with great expense, so companies to not easily apply this designation and when they do, it must be labeled as such, so I just now re-read the label and sure enough it has an EPA # and it is EPA Reg. No.8709-8.

What does this mean..................the company API spent a ton of $$$ on this and with much testing and I really think they just might have a winner here......only time, no actually, only we will be the final decision makers here so I think there is a lot riding on this as we all know what giant PITA micro-alge(s) can become.

As a user of some very nasty chems, in the golf business, I can assure you, YOU must read the label and follow it very carefully and if you can't comply with that....DONOT use it period.....IMO.

Po........

So you started on the 5 th correct ?? and since then you have used it twice ??? great results so far if so...

I don't recall your setup(s)..are you growing macro's, refurgium what have you ???

Cont. good luck and keep updating us..........

In the three solanas there are no macro algaes in my 65 sps I have chaeto and calerpa and they are showing no signs of ill effects from the algaefix.

"During" pics, as promised...

I have noticed some really encouraging die-off, but I think I would be seeing greater results if I remove my carbon. I'm pulling that out today!

Some of these pics don't look like there's been much change, but after doing my last water change, I can really see it. There was a T O N of nastiness in the old water!

This monti was COVERED in GHA. It's really starting to thin out. ¡BONUS!

These rocks are newer than the rest in the tank, but I have noticed no new growth!

{more "during pics!}

Also, the pink cat's paw in the top left corner was really plagued. I pulled out a serious chunk of hair a couple of days ago. It just keeps dying!

This is a shot of an overflow box. I should have gotten a "before" pic of it. It had a lot of hair clinging to the glass. Not anymore!

Last shot... This looks bad, but the little red frag was C O V E R E D when I started treatments. After 4 doses, it is uncovered, and looks like it survived. I had given up hope on it!

Last note, sorry for the small, blurry pics.
I will have to get a better camera . . . eventually . . .

Algaefix test. Will see if it works. Stay tuned

All,

I have a tank that's well over a year old and established. My corals are growing well and I have good coralline algae growth. I've been noticing a gradual increase in green hair algae. Nothing has changed in my chemistry and my 5 stage RODI seems to be working properly.

I have an extremely light bio load to boot.

I'm leaning towards the halides since they just went over a year in age?????

So here we go. This is how I started this test:

skimmer is running
measured 8ml to add. 72 gal + sump capacity
applied directly to top of tank
will wait for three days and add more if needed.

Here's a pic. Not the best.

Tagging along, great thread.

Wondering how this will effect cheato for those of you who have a refugium set up with it. I also have Nemastoma, any ideas on how it may effect that?

I am on my second dose and I can see there is no effect on Cheatos but hair algae has become a little discolored. I take this as sign that for once HA is losing YEHHHHH!!!!

I got home tonight, and had to empty my skimmer cup.

It was full of hair! How all the hair got past my filter pad, I don't know. Anyway, it's dying baby! W000000000-H000000000!

PS.....

A HUGE (probably overdue) "thank you" to DEVOMAN for starting this thread. I wouldn't have tried this treatment if I hadn't heard about it from this forum.

WHO DA' MAN?
DEVO DA MAN!

Here is a good one for you guys! I wish I had pictures!

There was a big wade of HA growing on my only snail in my refuge ( I kid you not, this thing was huge and was growing like crazy! I had cleaned my refuge completely and threw out all the Macro algae, scrubbed the walls etc). Anyhow, two treatments later (I just checked), the dam thing fell off the snail and the snail has its clean shell.
I really think turing off the skimmer increases the effectiveness of this algaefix. I dosed it in night and turn off the skimmer. Then turn it back on in the morning until I do the next dose (I would like to keep it off but my darn kalk reactor broke and the pH drops to 7.8 if I do not turn on the skimmer).

Moral of the story: It worked for ME. My livestock is good without any sign of stress so far. so I agree with dwimber's last post!

I add around 13-14 ml. I'm guessing my total water volume to be around 125 gallons. (125g tank - rocks + volume of 'Fuge...)

Interesting strategy madreef... I was supposed to add #5 in the morning, but since my skimmer is off right now (just clean it), I'm going to add tomorrow's dose tonight. I'll kick on the skimmer in the morning!

And was one 16oz bottle enough for all treatments?

I just bought 8 oz bottle. I guess if you endup doing six doses, it is still a lot of treatment that is left in the bottle.

Sorry, I thought I had read that you guys had bough two big bottles. Interesting thread!
