Hair Algae Solution That Worked For Me

Thanks Dwimber and Madreef! I gotta tell you I was hesitant to start the thread being so new to this forum. Nice to hear that it is working for you! Thanks again!

Dwimber - how much of your "during" shots is strictly the work of algaefix versus pulling out since you mentioned you had pulled out some big chunks

Navychief- MH are typically only at their best 6-8 months, if yours are going on a year its time to change those puppies! You will see gha now and a little after the new bulbs go in but it should subside on its own after the bulb burns in and things go back to being normal for your lighting.

It's not stated on the site but does anyone know if this would work for Red Hair Algae as well as green? Better yet, has anyone actually seen it work on the red death first hand?

Oh you mean that red turf algae.. the little tiny wiry stuff you just can't get rid of? Now that I'd be curious about.

chrisstie,

When I mentioned that I had pulled out chunks of hair, i was talking about chunks that were already discolored and dying. I pulled them out before they let go of rocks and went free floating, but it was already dead.

Here is the info:

Reef â€"œsafe aquarium algaecide. Controls many types of algae in marine and reef aquariums. Will not harm marine fish, corals and other invertebrates. Will not harm coralline algae. Effectively controls Green algae, “Red Slime,” and “Brown algae” in marine aquariums containing live corals, invertebrates and fish. Use weekly to control algal growth and reduce aquarium maintenance. Does not discolor water or cause foaming.

does that "red death" (never heard it called that but it fits) fall in there? Anyone??

I sure wish there was more information available about which marine organisms are killed by this product. Looking at the MSDS for the active ingredient, DIMETHYLIMINOETHYLENE DICHLORIDE, ETHOXYLATE, it says "harmful to marine organisms," and "ecotoxin." What does that mean? I just wish there were more info. on how the product works in our reefs.

Mind you, if I had a horrible infestation I would probably just do it and hope for the best (or else break down the tank and replace all the rock). But for the level of problem I have, the unknowns make me a bit nervous....

The company is near some of my stores I supervise. Chalfont Pa.

I will pay them a visit and get some information..

CanaryGirl,

If you don't have an epic GHA problem, I'd suggest just removing the rocks, and replacing them with new ones. If it's a huge problem, like mine, this is the way to go.

I've done a few treatments so far with pretty good results. Its been slowly disappearing. Odd thing though is that I'm seeing more and more red slime. I thought it was suppose to kill that too. Weird.

You could be building up nutrients and po4 from your algae thats dying.

Do weekly water changes and check your TDS from your RO/DI unit.

MM33732,

Red Slime feeds on ammonia and nitrite (I think) and does well in anaerobic conditions. That means to get rid of it, you should increase water flow and do more aggressive water changes.

I agree with Jay4Robin. The slime is probably feeding on the nutrients released from the dying algae. When you do a water change, be sure to vacuum out as much of the dead stuff as you can.

Good luck!`

I have more info on this product.
It breaks down in your system after 24 hours and loses its affect.
I would make sure you work around all water changes.
It does not harm your macro algae cause it is thicker then hair algae and does not get harmed by the treatments.

I have a tiny amount of HA in my system near low flow areas and did a treatment 24 hours ago.

I see strands of HA already floating in my tank. I was advised after 3 treatments it will lose color and just fall apart and be gone soon after.

Every system will react at a different rate depending on your water quality.

I run ozone skim heavy and have barley any fish. I have 2 PO4 reactors.

FYI, I just picked up a bottle today at Petsmart. $16.99 off the shelf. I will start dosing tonight when I get home.

I was finally able to take some pictures of the snail I mentioned im my earlier post. I'll post those pictures tonight. Its damm cold here in WI (-14 F this morning), so I really don't want to do anything except keep checking the temperature of my tank. It is running around 71-74 :eek1: for almost a week. The heaters were in Sump and now I have moved them in the main tank. just hanging off the wall atleast to keep the DT warm enough!
