Ive been getting mixed reports about sea hares and how well they control hair algea. I hear they go at hair algea like its going out of style regardless to its length. On the other hand there are folks who think the risk of them going toxic isnt worth the risk and if the algea is to long they will not touch it. whats the deal...
(thats allot of hair, hare,hear!!!lol)

The deal is exactly as you presented it, as far as my knowledge of the topic goes. Some species can release toxins, as well an ammonia spike, if they happen to die in your system. However, they are reportedly good for hair algae control. I have not used them personally. If you are worried about the toxic situation, why not try a different animal to attempt to keep hair algae in line? A few people use turbo snails, lawnmower blennies and other reef critters for this purpose. :)
