Halide Q & A

A 120 would be a great fit for that light.

Jack, thanks for your reply.

I live in a community that is incredibly limited on all things marine, and tanks is certainly no exception. I have a source on a 90 gallon, a look that I love. Do you feel that is too small?

I have no opposition to going with a 120, I've just never come across one where I am, and hitting one via classifieds would be like finding a needle ..... You get the idea.

Thanks

IIRC a 90 is about 18" deep (front to back) and a 120 is 24" deep so depending on how wide the light fixture you will have an idea of how deep of a tank it will work best on. If the fixture is 18" and the tank is 18" it is not a good fit, you will have some light spill.

I'm not too concerned about spill since the unit is only 14" deep. My concern is that an 18" deep (vertically) is too shallow and the light will be too intense for that depth and volume (e.g. bleaching, etc.)

Sorry if I was confusing....

Thanks

You can always start out with lower par bulbs and limit the length of time all of the lights are on, however I doubt you will have an issue with too much light.

^^^^ congrats on a great light, I think that you could go with a 90 gallon tank and it should be great, especially if you want to go SPS.

Hey fellow RC'ers!!

I just got an amazing deal on the Giesemann infinity 2x250 + 4x54 T5. I was hoping someone could give me some advice on the smallest tank size I could feasibly go with, without blasting the tank with too light. I'd love to get a 90 gallon bow front, but I'm thinking this may be too small for so much light.

Thanks guys!

Hi can anyone recommend a good MH/T5 fixture for a 48" long tank?

Looking for a quality fixture looking to run radium 20k bulb.

I heard alot about the giessman infinity/spectra , but any else that are goo quality? Hamilton?

Is there a hands down best 400w bulb/ballast/reflector combo. Would you still use vho's over t-5s. I am setting up a 72"x40"x24" sps with lps on the bottom/shadows.

This is where I am for options now. Only want to run the MH for 4-5hrs. The rest of the day will be the actinics and 3 Radions Gen1 between the two MH.
1) XM 10K 400W Halides and 4x VHO URI Super Actinics -
2) 400W Mogul Radium overdriven with HQI 4 60" t-5s on both sides
3) 250W HQI 14K Phoenix with 4 60" t-5s on both sides
I have not decided on any reflectors.
Thanks for the opinions!

Those are both DE, not Mogul. IIRC only the Geismann or Sfiligoi currently have a fixture that will run a Radium in 250 watts. I am not counting the Hamilton because it is a poor performing unit with the single poorly shaped reflector. Sadly, those Mogul fixtures are getting harder and harder to find.

hey all...

question, I have a current sunpod fixture of MH that 150w x2 for my standard 90 gallon tank. they were supplemented with 260 watts of power compact 12000k bulbs. The PC crapped out on me...so i purchased 2 MH pendants with 250W 14k bulbs. now i am sitting here wondering if that is way to much wattage using the sunpod and the two pendants...

powdermonkey, I woudl think that w/ a good reflector (lumenmax elite), 250w radiums would be enough.. I'm running two of them on my 48Lx24Wx31T tank and it is more than enough.
that being said, i'm running mine 8 hrs a day.

LumenMax Elites will never cover a 40" depth, the only reflector I am aware of that can cover that adequately is the LumenMax Large, but several of us have been on the lookout for those for quite a while.

Sorry, should of clarified 72L x 40W x 24D. And because of the smoothed weir the water will be around 22 1/2. I am looking for the GOLD standard:beer:

You were right the first time, depth is front to back and though I am jealous of the 40" depth on a 72" tank it will be difficult to light with just three lights. The closest you will get to a good spread will be a LumenArc Large, though they are not in production but they do pop up from time to time in the for sale section. Perhaps one of the large Hamilton pendants but I have not actually seen figures for them and how well they spread.

Whew, Pmonkey, I thought you meant 24"Deep, hence 250s under LMexlites would work exceptionally well.
That being said, a 40"D tank would be hell to work in... I have enough trouble on the 31"D.. cant get down to the bottom unless I climb in.
