Halide Q & A

I have a Viper 150w MH unit.

I had a phenoix 14K bulb on it, but had just switched it out with a Coralife 20K bulb. Run time has been about 10hrs.... will it get bluer thru time? Looks very very white right now.

I have a 90 gallon tank with some softies, a few mushrooms, sps. My lighting is 2-175w 10k right on the water, I'm wanting to re do my whole lighting. The guy I bought it off of had a fowlr, I have put some purchased rock with coraline algae all over it in there and got some bleaching. Just wondering if I should stick with the 175s and raise them off the water or go to 150s? I don't like the bulbs being so close to the water.

I would just raise them to about 14" above the water. What ballasts do you have?

hello, so i have a JBJ 70 watt 14k bullb that i believe has gone out, it will be 3 days now with zero light in my 25 gallon tank..

I can get a 65watt coralife bulb from a Local fish store...thoughts

I have 2 250w mh on my tank with parabolic reflectors i want to get into sps so I was wondering what reflectors help the light penetrate the best ? Like the top 5. Thanks

I have 4 PC 96 watt. I would like to add some MH or T5 for SPS.

If I went MH, like 2x250, what's a good retrofit value?

Tank is 120 24x24x48.

Thanks!

25 Gallon tank and 250 watt HQI reef optix 3 pendant.

Doable? If so, how high should it be placed to avoid heat and burning corals?

Ok so I have purchased a not so reef friendly tank after what im reading; Its measurments are 20Lx18Wx36D.... yes deep! now Im stuck looking for a light that won't kill me each month on my electric bill... was looking at finnex dl2424 4xt5/9xled combo or nova extreme pro 20" 4x t5... hearing that may not be enough light to penetrate the 30+" of water, not a huge coral person but Im assuming I will want some at some pt and want to by the right light the first time... what Im reading 400 se mh? again Im trying very hard to decypher personal opionin vs requirement for such a deep but narrow tank...

You bought a fish tank. (IMO) You can also light from back and bottom, there are you limits on what you can try. For coral 400watt MH would get the deepest with the most...

You could use it on is side....:lmao::wavehand:

my bad..

Heres An Interesting Educational Video On Reef Aquarium Lighting

In this video, I discuss the different types of lighting, including LED systems, as well as the pros and cons of each lighting fixture. I hope this helps!

Thinking of setting up a 25 gallon 18 inch cube with clams and a few sps.

Option 1: either a fish needs it 150 or 250 watt fixture. Some in the nano forum like the set up.

Option 2: someone local is selling a NIB coralvue 250 watt ballast and a cheapo reflector for half of #1. Later I would add a better reflector so cost would be about the same for both 250's.

I was thinking of either a 14K phoenix bulb or a 20K radium but they seem to be having some issues.

If I went with the 150 what are some of the more favorite bulbs?

Thank you.

I have two older magnetic 175w mogul ballasts. I purchased two new 250w Galaxy electronic ballasts so my question is this. Do I need to change the mogul socket and wires or can the existing set up handle the additional power? The wires and sockets are in good shape with no issues. Any and all .02 is welcome.

On a metal halide fixture for a 55 gallon tank what shld I look for as in watts and number of halide bulbs. Kelvin. Actinic bulbs etc. It will be used over a tank with sps, lps, zoa, and a clam. The tank length is 48 inches and 19-20 inches deep

Need Help.

Need Help.

Can Galaxy 250W Ballast w/ Mini LB produce more PAR then Vertex 400W ballast with the same reflectors? Both are running 20K Radiums and bulb are 17" from water surface.

The reason why I asked is I had switched out my 400W ballast to 250W to reduce PAR on the bottom of the tank. When I installed the 250W ballast the PAR in the center bottom where the sand is 358. With the 400W it was 200 PAR.
I know when I did a PAR reading on the 400 bulb it was 7-8 months old. I know new bulbs will be higher but these PAR are insane. Can anyone explain this problem?
