what is the difference between Halide bulbs and Metal Halide bulbs..thought i seen a thread on this at one time but i cant seem to find it..

Thanks

Rick

ok next question do they have different bulbs for halides..10k, 12k, 14k like they do with metal halides..

Thanks

Rick

"metal halide" refers to the exact same lamps as "halide" does. Therefore, yes multiple color temps are available because they are the same thing.

cool here's what i have in mind..i have a 15 gallon i want to setup a reef with ..i have a halide fixture that lights the tank up really welland i intend to supplement with t- 5 atintic..inside a custom canopy..heat will be removed with 2 computer fans at the back of the canopy..what does everyone think of this project..

Thanks

Rick

I hope your not thinking halogen instead of halide because these aren't the same thing. As of a 15 gallon tank with a metal halide bulb over it I think you would have a real hard time holding the temp anywere close to 80.

ok im looking to see if it is halogen..the bulb is 250watt do they make halogens in 250w

Thanks

Rick

Yes, they do. Halogens come in basically any wattage.

ok i guess im going to give this project up..i cant figure out if this light is a halogen or a halide..ive never heard of anyone using halogens for a lighting system..thanks for your input everyone.

post a pic of what you are talking about...

halogen lamp holders can be be DIY'ed into to Halide holders...you can do 70w and 150 halides out of standard halogen fixtures...all you need then is a ballast and a bulb...

i diy a 500w halogen fixture into a 150 metal halide fixture...took ten minutes with a dremel..

ok i will post a pic in the morning..do you think i will have heat issues with 2 40mm computer fans in the canopy

thanks

Rick

I honestly think a 250 watt halide over a 15 gallon tank would need a chiller maybe I'm wrong and fans could take care of it but I don't see it working on such small of a tank. The problem with using fans your trying to cool the tank with evaporation and with only 15 gallons and no sump this isn't a good idea.

im not doing 250w..probably more like 70w.. the fixture i have is a halogen fixture that i would convert to a mh fixture
