Happy Holidays from Pirates Cove! Update!

Pirates Cove Reef
I hope you all have a great Holiday Season! Here is a quick update on the Pirates Cove 400 Radion only mixed Reef. I thought I would never run Led, and I can say without a doubt that these are the best lights I have ever owned and in my opinion if you run enough of them you do not need to supplement Radions with T5.

I have simplified my system somewhat and removed Ozone, the Arid c36 reactor, and 130 liters of Siporax.

I have added 6 Brightwell media Blocks to take the place of the Siporax and reused the space to make a very large refugium that has a Kessil 380 grow light that has explosive Chaeto Growth. At some point I will probably pull my Sulfer Detrinator offline as well. I also installed a Chloromines Monster filter in front of my Rodi as the water in Cypress would burn through my standard carbon filters faster than I went through Di. This and lowering my silicates is what has made my tank thrive.

Current parameters are:

Alk 8.4
CA 440
Mag 1400
Nitrate 10
Phosphate .08
Salinity 1.025 measured on new Coralvue salt tester.
Water stays below 78 and never hits lower than 75, no heaters.

I dose and currently in the process of putting CA reactor online just trying to find the time to plumb everything in and keep it stable!

All my SPS and most of my LPS are doing well with the exception of a few favias I have been loosing, always something and I suspect a large Chevron that is about to be voted off the island!

I have a new load of fish ready in quarantine so I will probably catch a couple large tangs and a Pair of lightning clowns that bite way to hard! I have broke way too much SPS flinching from the damn fish biting me!

Let me know what you think and Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from Pirates Cove!

Looking good! I am just getting back into the hobby after an almost 7-year break. I think you got some frags and maybe colonies from me when I was breaking up my tank in 2012. I was in Los Alamitos in an apt. on Green St. Nice to see that you are still at it. Would you mind giving me some info on the Saturday meeting you mentioned on the video? Thanks!

very nice!

do you manually feed Scoly to keep them alive? I'm having a hard time keeping them over half an year.

and any noticeable change from removing Ozone?

The Arid is a device for people who do not have the space for a refugium, it worked well, but was a pain in the tail to clean out and for this reason it got neglected in my maintenance routine. Much easier to reach into a large tank and pull out half the cheato for export than take the arid apart. I have the original model for sale if anyone wants for $600.

I removed Ozone because I could not figure out why I was sometimes having a problem and I turned off to see if I saw any change or improvements. I can say I did not notice a difference so I left it off.

I did drop my high nitrate level from keeping it below 25 before I worried to keeping it below 10. I do notice much better polyp extension since I dropped this number down and better colors on some corals.

I have been adding some Frags today and am enjoying the tank!

I also finally beat the Texas Trash polyps that were getting out of hand. While flow was off I pulled as much of them out as I could, then I used putty to make thin patches and covered everywhere they were. If I see a polyp I cover it and I have not seen any for at least a week. If you have never dealt with a ugly zoa, these are about the worst and fast growing. Hope to keep them gone!

SCMAS meeting are the third Friday of each month at IHOP in Santa Ana, members who either attend 6 meetings or donate 6 hours, or a combination of both are allowed to join the Christmas party. No non members allowed at this event. The next club meeting will be in January and will be a used equipment swap. I have learned a ton from other reefers in the club and on top of that many members are very generous with trading corals and helping members recover from a crash. I have several of the rainbow men's available to club members at no charge. Just ask that you share the splits if I give you Ben:)

Goodnight.

Hang on to the O3, it is tremendously effective on many strains of Dino's.

Can't wait to see the tank again!!!

Ive seen it in person and all i have to say is WoW my jaw dropped when i walked in through that front door. Very beautiful tank, love the mixed reef theme.
