I am heading out to Hawaii in mid August and was also planning on visiting RCT out in Hawaii. Has anyone ever brought a fish back home from a flight? What are the procedures? and who to contact?
I want to buy an Interruptus from RTC if I can bring it back home from the flight and just wanted to see if others have ever done this.
If I am able to bring it back home I am also willing to take orders if anyone wants to pick up a captive bred fish as well. LMK

Thanks

Warren,

I just brought back 5 fish from Hawaii, I was flying Hawaiian air. I placed them in my hand bag and when through custom just fine. If custom ask you what kind of food is in the bag :), just tell them it's fish :).

I just looked through their website and saw the Interruptus you'll be getting. What an amazing looking fish! I'd be afarid to spend $660 on a fish though.

Does Frank have them available now?

I dont know if he does. He said that things are pretty busy at the moment due to "peak production". We are just trying to set up and trying to schedule a tour. I hope he has one available all I told hime was that I want to bring one back if permitted. Its either between that or the "Centropyge resplendens" but I dont think its quite as nice. I have wanted a "Centropyge interruptus" for years. I remember a few years back that a LFS here had 3 of them for $350 ea. but wild caught. Thats a bit scary. ANother option would be the "Joculator" or the "Colini" but the price for the "Colini" is a bit too much.

SouthWest would have no idea what oty have on your carry-on, on top of that they do not conduct bag searches, TSA does...I can check with a few buddies I have in TSA management to see what their policy is on small bags of water and live fish through the check point.

Colini can be found at certain stores for about $100
Yes the fish could survive but customs might be a bit trickier from my experience

I think shipping it would be easier. I received a pair of Interruptus from Frank, and they were shipped at different times. They both came in perfectly.

That would be great Alex.
Thanks...

I just wondered what the screener would think when he see's a fish skeleton moving around on his screen (in my carry on)

The sercurity check point never care if you have fish in the bag, it's only restricted by some airline. I never once was stop at the check point for having fish in the hand bag or sometime I carry them in clear container that everyone can see.

Just recently I carried back 5 fish, you would imagine it's large enough for them to ask me what is it in the bag, but nothing was mentioned and I went through security just as normal.

Frank does not have anything available and will not in mid-August from what he said. If you can get in touch with him to meet up do so. I've been to his facility (his basement and garage) and it is fantastic... With that said even if you were bringing back fish your best bet is to have him ship them. The fish are guarenteed 21 days, and you never know when or where your flight will get diverted or cancelled. I fly regularly to Hawaii and Guam via American and they don't care about fish. However, with the high dollar amount of Frank's fish I'd just let it be shipped... the only fish he had ever lost within the old 14 day guarentee period was a shipment to Brazil (as of the last time I spoke with him... found it interesting that he had an order from Brazil...) I did see that on the show "Airline" they vehemently kept a passenger with a majestic angel from travelling on Southwest.

While you're there be sure to give Charles Delbeek a holler at the Waikiki Aquarium for a behind the scenes... if you like rare angels you'll see their adult Holacanthus limbaughi... the only known one on display in the world...

Ah yes the Clipperton Angel. :D

Is RCT still producing C. multifasciata? I remember they had them for super cheap a while back. For an eating multi-barred it was well worth the price.

John thanks for all the info. I really appreciate that. I have been in contact with Frank and he does not have any available. But I will take a look and see what he has available when I get there and maybe just have him ship the fish. I wouldnt mind purchasing a multi-barred like yours. I enjoy that angel as well. BTW did you see the pic I posted on the hybrid?. one has never been shipped to the US and only 12 has been shipped to asia in the past 20years. alright buddy take care.

Frank is no longer producing C. multifasciatus and doesn't even have his pair anymore... They sold for just $120... the cheapest since the days when he had flames available... I saw this pair last year before they were available and I immediately looked at him and said... "practice?" :D Let's just say he has his sites on another Paracentropyge member... that is no secret of course... He's done C. debelius now in limted numbers, and all went to Japan for big bucks... although not quite as high as the $5000 plus that wild specimens go for... here's a shot of two of the CB debelius for those who haven't seen... On a side note for anyone who is a fan of Frank, you need to read his old articles in FAMA from years ago... fascinating!

wombat here's a shot I took of the now fully adult clipperton angel at Waikiki... not colorful but a rare and interesting site considering their super tiny wild range...

fishsold I saw the image you posted... beautiful! I'm not sure who your source was on that, but these conspic/merdithi hybrids have come to this country before... as recent as early this summer one came into a wholesaler... It was not listed on the list, but many uberrare things that come in do not get listed... it's very easy to say what HAS come in, but much harder to say what hasn't come in... I'm guessing either a wholesaler or someone in the business told you, but they are misinformed on this one...
