Sorry to hear that, I lost a clown tang and a powder blue tang days after putting them on my tank, got really upset, just didnt know why they didnt make it because the rest of my tangs, clowns and wrasses are just fine...

Can't find them even Johnny came over and helped me move the rock it's a pain to move 450 lbs of live rock and trying not 2 lose coral. Not 2 mention you have 2 go swimming.

That really sucks! I got ich in my last 50 gal randomly and i think it started from one of my wrasses it took out a humma and i believe two other wrasses plus both my naked clowns. i started a QT and saved one dragon wrasse and my burr fish.

I had a very similar thing happen to me. I lost about 2/3 of my fish in my 300g. I was not pleased. As stated above NO LFS intentionally keeps their livestock long enough to cure ich if the fish has it when it arrives. If you buy one from SW, even though they medicate their water, a fish would have to be there something like 28 days for it to have gone through the cycle to the point where the stage of the ich would be susceptible to either copper or hypo. (They do copper I believe) I am pretty sure Rob doesn't want to keep his fish that long before selling.

I strongly suggest you take this opportunity to learn that you don't want ich in your tank. Many fish can live with it, as you saw, many can't. Please let your tank run fallow (no fish, inverts are okay) for the next 6-8 weeks. This should rid you of the ich permanently(some people would argue this, but in many cases it works) then QT every fish you get in either copper or Hypo for a month before putting them into the tank.

As I said, this happened to me about 6 months ago, and I let my tank stay fallow since I wanted to keep fish such as Powder blues and blue spots, which I don't think will be able to thrive in a tank that has ich present. You never know what you might want to add in a year or two, and to know that you have no ich because of your preventative measures will greatly increase your ability to add what you want to add without that worry.

On another note, I have noticed virtually every fish I put through the QT process (10g tank on the kitchen counter) has gotten MUCH more friendly. If you are sick of your fish hiding from you, I think they really get to know you in the QT tank.

If you guys/gals don't know already I am a big fan of properly sized UV sterilizers. Yes, they are effective against parasites if the flow rate and wattage is correct. My point is if your going to spend a hundreds if not thousands of dollars on fish why not throw few hundred on a good a sterilizer.

Most likely but I never had any issues using one on a reef tank. I run mine for a month after adding new fish to my display tank. I've had better luck doing this then running copper in a quarantine tank.

I have to say I am very meticulous when I select fish at the LFS.

My rules when buying fish:

1. Must be eating
2. The fish looks flawless and exhibits no symptoms of being ill
3. No infected fish in the same tank
4. Very few infected fish in the same system

Normally I spend at least 30 minutes observing before buying. I won't buy a fish if I see it flash or scratching. I use paraguard dip before adding fish to the tank and sometimes feed medicated food for a week.

With my new found fear of fish disease I've been doing some searching. Have any of you used garlic to deal with fish disease and is it really safe for inverts? Is it effective?

Some swear by it. I had no luck and my fish continued to suffer. I think if anything it may boost the fish's immune system, but its not an ich cure. Some of the tougher fish will show immunity to ich and be fine but that doesn't mean there not carrying it. The problem comes when you go to add a more delicate or more prone to Ich problems fish ( like the Powder blue tang or the blue spotted jaw fish. It seems that almost every Ich disaster post I have read that the yellow tangs make it through which comes to show that some fish deal with it better than others. After going through it, I wont take my chances again.

Garlic is not a cure. But it certainly does help keep the fish healthier, and it's totally reef safe. It boosts fishes' immune systems against disease and parasites. Another plus is that it's an appetite stimulant for fish, so if you have a picky eater or a new addition that won't take to the food you're using, garlic helps there too. I soak my fish food in garlic extract prior to feeding every time. And you don't have to spend tons of money at health food stores or pet stores to get garlic extract either -- just press your own and mix the resulting oil in with RO water to make a nice extract.
