heat issues

AC would be the easiest way to cool it, but pretty expensive.

People use fans blowing at the surface of their tanks, chillers, change the lighting periods to shorter lighting cycles or turn lights on at light, or unfortunately when all else fails, people sell their tanks.

I've done

Changing my photo period from 12noon to now starts at 3pm attinics and 4pm for daylight.. and ends around midnight. Less heat in the tank and less $$$$ for electric bill

Put 2- 4 1/2" metal fans which you can hook up to a timer to go on with your lights. the fanning aids in evaperation which inturn cools your water temps - but downside is faster evap and more water topoffs....

I've also switched to low heat using Powerheads... from 2 seio 1500s to 4 korialis #4's... lot less heat and power and more dispursed flow...

Used to run around 81-82... but now between 77-79

My last resort if all fails this summer is bite the bullet and just get either a drop in or inline chiller.. Some say get a bigger than what you need chiller so that it dosn't need to keep on staying on...
But they are redicolously expensive..

Hope this helps

Fan in the canopy that blows on the water. Probably gonna increase the fan count this summer. When it's REALLY hot, I run AC... but we want the AC at that point for ourselves so I don't think of it as added expense.

Also, have a generator handy for the 3 day power outages.

I use combination of all:

fan blowing on top of tank and another on the sump
change lighting period from previous 3pm to 11pm now to 5pm to 2am.
open canopy doors.
1/3hp chiller when temp still does not go down to desired temp.

fans blowing on the surface, ziplock bags filled with ro/di water and put in the freezer......when you need it, just place bags in tank and let defrost.....continue till you reach desired temp. good to have multiple bags incase first couple bags dont drop temp enough.

fan and a lot of fans :D ..

I have central AC in my house. When it gets above 80 outside, my wife turn on the AC. She can't handle the heat :D .. My house is usually around 70-75 degree so it's not that bad.

I have 400W MH on my 50G and I'm able to keep it at 80 so far. Electrical bills for summer will be really bad :( ..

I have the same heat issues and have only 3 175W MH on a 180. My tank temp rises from 79 up to 83.6 and we haven't even had a 'hot' day yet. :eek1:
I have 4 fans blowing, but that doesn't do enough, looks like iI'll have to change the photo period and if that fails bite the bullet for a chiller. Maybe there should be a thread on heat resistant reef inhabitants....I do have a few corals and fish that survived a 99F disaster.

Damm north bay.... your probly aint as bad as MAYNOR's, last time I talked to him, his was crazy...

but geezzzz 6 MH...are you running a business or something ??

I've come to the conclusion I need a temperature controller, not that my tank was in any danger but a "just in case" not to mention a nice little digital method to know how hot the tank is instead of saying "Is that line next to the 80 or the 70 mark...." on a thermometer. (although I could just get a nice lab grade thermometer for no issues).

But I blew a nice sized fan right across my frag growout tank (which is connected to the whole system), I swore I dropped from 84 to 77 within a couple hours, which could also be just as bad as high heat.

Anyone know if those "temperature controllers" on ebay are useful? They're digital, they control stuff, why wouldn't a $40 one of these work vs $100+ "aquarium brand"

Example something like this
Ebay link

Our Eco Cooler kept the tank down to 76 degrees over these past few 90+ degree days out here (it is 76 due to the seasonal temp setting that the Aquacontroller uses). Thank goodness it only costs 20w to run the cooler (plus the 100w for the darned eheim to feed it *sigh*.)

Fans are a great way to bring the temp down, but a controller is a must :). Stephen (Bigred) down in Los Banos built a DIY Deltec Eco Cooler (the first DIY one that I actually thought was worthwhile.. most of them I have seen were not worth the materials that went into their making).. Here is his thread on the CVS forum : http://www.cvreefers.org/showthread.php?t=7169

Mike, we have a used Amaerican Pinpoint dual stage temp controller, if you want to work out a trade of some sort :). We used it on an old QT tank that is no longer setup. Shoot me a PM if you are interested. :)

sparkss, could you give us some more info on your eco cooler? how big is your eco-cooler and how much pull down did you need to do? did you set it up in a tank room vented outside or some other configuration?

i'm trying to figure out whether this might work for me.. (seems alot cheaper than a chiller..)

Yes I am growing weed on the side of my tank to supplement my reef cooling cost

Elite, yes I cant get enough lights. It hurts my eye to look at my tank for too long when all the lights are on

chillers are definitely way too expensive...
i'm kinda worried about the whole heat wave that's yet to come. over the past weekend, we had record highs for this season... mid 90's... and my tank didn't go past 82..

i only have 1 ice cap w/ sensor to cool down my halide...

thinking about adding a 4 x 4 computer fans i glued together from a junk pile at work to my sump... that should cool my tank some.. i'll let you know what i find out...
