Heat Wave AHHHHH!!

holy cow!

I have had to keep a constant eye on my tanks. I have frozen more bags full of r/o water in the past 24hrs than I have all year long!

Here in San Diego the heats on it was 108 degrees F yesterday and today will be just as bad :(

I have had the tank jump up to 86 but thats as highest its been.

Should I raise the heater so the tank stays @ like 82 because daytime gets about 84-85 and night about 79-80 is that o.k.?

P.S. My RBTA has been stressed from the heat, the mouth is open a little what can I do to help it?

Thanks :)

By all means don't increase the heater. I'd turn the darn thing off. I take it you don't have AC or it is not working properly. For the moment you might try placing fans blowing on the tank surface. Also leave the lights off except in the early morning. You might try to add a window AC, which would help both you and the fish. A chiller would help but they cost more than a small window AC.

ya im here in orange county and my temp jumped to 86 but ive gotten it down to 84 now with bags of ice and a small fan over the water surface, i hope i dont have to deal with this all summer

do you have A/C ???

Its almost 90 here in NY, I keep it 67-70 in my house year round and my tank stays around 79-80 ...

haha..try coming over here to arizona lol...its been getting up to like, 110-115 a lot lately...

but i SERIOUSLY recomend using fans! Just in my room, it stays about 85-90 so i just put a 10 inch fan from walmart on a shelf right next to the tank and pointed it accross the waters surface...i just let that run constantly. My tank stays at 78 ALL THE TIME...the fan keeps the lights cool, so they dont give any heat, and it makes water evap just a little faster, and the more evap you have, the cooler it will be..i only have about a half gallon a day maybe...idk...not too much.

HTH

yeah I hjave a fan on the tank and one on the sump/fuge and the temp still get up to 85 but thats all I can do is fans and ice packs :)

Krazy K your a luck fella ya know

hmmm...my guess then is that either your powerheads or some pump are running hot...i think that maxijets run somewhat hot, along w/mags..

krazy k is lucky lol..you get to keep your house at 67-70 year round lol...i'm lucky to get 80 in the house (mostly cuz my dads too cheap and doesnt wanna pay the electric bill for a/c lol.) but it is too hot here.

I would definitely check your pumps. I would remove or shut them off one at a time and leave it off for 24 hrs and see if it makes any difference. Keep doing this until you find the culprit(s). I had a Quiet One 4000 that I never realized was going bad until I noticed my temps going up, that how I found it and replaced it with an OceanRunner 3500.
You might also cut back on your lighting periods.
Cheap Wal Mart $8 clip on fans work wonders. They move much more air than computer fans.

I doubt that its the pumps since the temp drops after the sun goes down. Either he has no AC or the AC is just not keeping up with the extreme heat. I would get a small window unit to run in the tank room before its too late.

well its not my return pump ( the only pumpin the tank ) its a mag 9.5 and its only 1 month old!

I felt the pump last night and it was a cool as the water which was about 82

and no A/C :(

Theres your problem. You can pick up a used AC unit pretty cheap or even get a smaller new one for around $100-$150.

or if money is an issue..go for bigger fan lol...i've got a bigg (ish) fan on mine...i think its a 10 incher..but it works none the less..

so theres no other filters or any pumps of any kind? the heater didnt get turned up at all? and have you felt the lights? Lights will give off heat to a certain point, and if there's no ac, then they arent being cooled..i have it so that my fan is hitting my lights and the water...

one more thing...are you getting any evaporation? I know that it will cause it to cool...but i'm not sure how else to evap water other than lights, fan (which is the best i htink) and overflow...any time water is hitting/getting hit by air it will evap, thus making the temp go down.

A bigger fan is not going to solve that issue.

No glass tops I hope? I know a clip on fan works wonders. I made a Brute can of fresh saltwater Saturday and the temo was 88.2 as the jugs were out in my garage. I put a Mag 5 in the can to circulate the mix and stuck one clip on fan over the side blowing across the can and in 1.5 hours the entire 25 gallons was cooled to 81.0 ready for my water change.

What kind of livestock (besides the nem) do you have in your tank? How old is the anemone? Is anything else in the tank showing signs of stress?

Dude.
I would just take the heater out for the summer, I'm also in so-cal and have been ice bagging the last couple days... -_- Also, think about adjusting your photo period, I don't turn my lights on til 4 because my house is hottest between like 12-3, and then I just run my lights for 6 hours (til 10), that seemed to help A LOT (Lights used to come on at 12). Do you have a hood or anything on your tank? Luckily I don't, so I just use a regular fan that I had around the house, I plugged it into the lights timer so that the fan only runs when the lights are on, might want to give that a shot (if you dont have a lid, canopy ect..) GL!

nothing else showing stress

I have
Xenia
Colt coral
Zoos
Ricoreda ( Florida )
Rhodactus Mushrooms
Green & Red mushrooms
Candy cane coral
Green Star Polyps
And A RBTA in a pear tree  and its about 2mo old

my lights are 1) 10000k 96w PC -- 1) Actentic 96w PC
they are on from 12-10pm

Fish are all fine
2 black clowns
1 randall goby
1 flame hawk
2 cleaner shrimp
1 tiger pistol shrimp
2 clown gobys

As stated before this is not a HEAT ISSUE! I have fine temp perams when its not above 100 outside and over 90 inside! I use fans galore and have no glass top. Fans are on almost 24/7 right now and the temp stays below 84 almost all the time.

Thanks for looking out but the soultions are to a problem thats not there, unless mother nature gets a little hotter than normal  I hate it when she dose that!

I also use bags of frozen RO water to cool it down when it gets really bad.

More less this post was ment to talk about how hot its been. I hate the heat, it makes you just want to sit a do nothing

Sounds like a heat issue to me. Get an AC unit in the window ;)
