As you are moving the clams into the new tank give them a freshwater dip. 5 min. each in ro/di water the same temp as the tank. You will see the snails dropping off of the clams.
wouldn't that stress a stress clam even more?
when u take the clam out of the tank, if its taken out of the water, rotate the clam under water to make sure there are no air bubbles in it, if there are and they are left there it could kill the clam
I had these snails in the hundred but not thoudsands however since I added several fairy and leopard wrassse in the tank I have not seen any of these snails in a long time. I have 15 or 17 clams in my 180 and they all remain perfectly healthy.
Very important point that's worth repeating. Temp and pH of the freshwater should be the same as the tankwater before dipping clams.
All incoming clams and snails should be inspected very closely for rice snails. It's still possible for these bad boys to hitch-hike into an aquarium on a non-host item like a piece of live rock.
Continuous predator control is advisable in a clam tank.
I have four Leopard Wrasses to help prevent any rice snails from gaining a foothold in my system.
hello clam experts,
thank you for the good advise. our situation hasn't gotten any better. we checked out our 2 nano reefs to see if we can pull some LR out to start a new tank, and both small tanks also have them. i am almost positive thay came with a snail package from saltwaterfish. we haven't bought snails anywhere else.
too late now. i was wondering if we can also dip LR in freshwater and use it in the new tank, or is it too risky? if its not ok to use our rock, how long should we cycle the new tank? 2-3 weeks?
we have a friend that might be able to the clams until the new tank is done cycling, but we'll see....
this is really stressful, actually a lot more stressful than having a 9 month old boy
dessy, I noticed you are in Chicago, I live on the Norht side. Not that I have a whole lot of free time, but if there is anything I can do to help let me know.
Unfortunately, not an empty one. My 29 has a pair a GSM and a BTA in it. My 58 has a clam in and the 75 has a juv. Koran. I am at Foster and Ravenswood. Not sure if holding one for you would help. Maybe some seeded liverock
we have a friend that is willing to take the clams for a while. we need to start cycling a tank, because our rock is also infested. we have to start from scratch. we were hoping to use rock from our nano, but this creatures are everywhere.! thanks again
