To the OP- how long did you let it go? How did your tank keep up with elemental demand?
I could be mistaken but doesn't corraline dislike being exposed to air? If this is so you could drain the tank for a few minutes then fill in back up. Then peel off the algae when it turns white.

Ok well I can't tell you the best way to do it but I can tell you how I would do it. I'd get a few cheap buckets (no need to do anything expensively here) but I would take everything out and then take the tank outside and wash it up and whole your at it rinse your sand off that's always good to do too, I'd make it a whole day project
