Sup everybody new here, I have a yellow spearer which I've had maybe 4 weeks now. Cute little fish, gets really scared really easy, if it comes out and sees me or a fish just instantly vanishes. Does this stop? ALso my mantis is a wuss, I got a couple damsel fish for food and it's scared of them! Whats that all about? SO I've been feeding it frozen food and was wondering what types of food most would feed my mantis. Can you make these things want to eat fish? My damsel fish are more entertaining at the moment, which is kind of sad. Also I'm trying hard to find a peacock, hoping its' not a monster maybe 4 inches or therearound, I'll pay for shipping! I live in sunnyvale, ca. Any help appreciated email to solara1632@hotmail.com.

How big is it? I wouldn't expect a 1 inch mantis to take down a 4 inch fish. If the mantis is at least equal size and has both spearers you could try starving it for a while. Thats what a lot of people do if they want a stubborn one to take to frozens, and it has been done to mae them eat real foods before too. Just don't feed him for 2-3 weeks. If it still won't kill the fish after 3 weeks feed it. It starts to get dangerous to not feed around 3 weeks. Also a reason the mantis is so skittish could be that the fish are bullying it. If you see this behavior (common in adult damsels) you might want to remove the fish. I assume it has a proper burrow under a suitable size rock? they like to dig under rocks for burrows. Feed it a various diet of frozens with at least 2 base foods and supplement with selcon and live. BTW you have a P. ciliata. good luck.

TY yeah the damsel fish are AGGRESSIVE as hell, they always nip at it and Im like HEY! Youre a damn mantis shrimp! You eat those! So I guess I'll figure out what to do later, I'm hopefully buying a peacock which I will stick in this tank, and relocate my spearer to a smaller tank with some soft bodied shrimp.

He has a nice burrow under some live rock right now, spends most of his time hiding now. The fish and the mantis are same sized, so I THINK I'm just going to stop feeding him till he kills one of the fish. Either that or I'm going to devote this tank to a peacock, and move my spearer to a different tank with a nicer setup, one with fish and cleaner shrimp etc. because I know he won't eat the fish lol.
