I just got what the lps refered to as a saddle carpet. its a smaller one to go in with my maroon clowns. well things were great and the larger clown started sticking her face in the carpet and pecking at it..... I went to check out things before lights out and her face are all kinds of white dots on her face..... is the carpet hurting her? I thought carpets did well with maroons .... these are gold striped maroons that are good size and love to play in Anemones. I am worried now... its only her face that has makes but I only seen her stick her face near the carpet.....the small male has stayed away and he is fine.....
so what to do???? remove the clowns or the carpet or will these things get better? help please my 1st carpet no other Anemone given me issues. thanks
Tommie

Maroons naturally host in BTA's and that's what I would suggest for them: a large healthy bubble tip anemone.
They may or may not be able to host in the carpet anemone. (What type of carpet anemone is it?)

its a stichodactyla haddoni from what I can tell I going to take some pics tomarrow. so i guess the big question is one of my item has to go maroons or carpet.... and its not my fish I love them dearly..... any other ideas out there?

They'll be fine... Maroon's natural host is a BTA but they will take to carpets. BIG difference in stickiness. She's sticking her face in there to develop the immunity to the anemone. She will need a much heavier slime coat to protect herself. Clowns are not automatically immune. I have a friend that released 5 baby skunk clowns into a carpet. They went right for it... and never came out. Normally, they poke and gently rub on the edges until they build up. The carpets have the strongest stinging nemocysts of any anemone. Be paitent. When the female gets it figured out, the male will follow and the same thing will happen.

Thanks

Thanks

Well after a over night stay the female is all better and the male is starting to go around it but not in it as of yet. I past some pics soon.

Thats no haddoni. Gigantea...

oh boy...

Please tell me thats not in a 6 gallon or even your 29 gallon. A S. Gigantea is probably the most difficult anemone to keep alive in captivity. Many who try to keep them alive usually fail. Some have success with them but the people that have success with them usually bought the Gigantea healthy to begin with, have very good lighting (MH or strong T5s), random strong flow and very good water parameters. Additionally, stability and a large tank is needed to house this anemone. I suggest you return the anemone back to the lfs or sell it to someone locally who has the proper conditions to take care of such an anemone.

S. Gigantea will perish in a setup that you have it in in days worth time. Sorry to give you bad news but I am only telling you the truth and facts.

Next time before you go out and buy an anemone, spend some time and do the research before making an investment that can cost an animals life.

nothing to worry about my maroon did the exact same thing. looked like she got stung a billion times

they were gone by morning and now i think its just the slime coat building up. they do this to get the rest of theyre bodys slime coat on

We shouldn't be worried about the maroon, but the Gigantea.

Well instead of any type of good news or encouragement guess I feel like I just got knocked over the head. I understand your concern and I did alot of reading and study on carpets and what might work in my tank. yes its in a 29 bio cube. and if its endanger I will certainly return it so it can have a correct home. I been coming on this site for a long while now, but I dont know if I ask anymore questions
55semireef u might have had good intentions but u could find alittle kinder way to talk to somone. I doing my best and trying to learn all I can from forums and what my LPS says. I was told this was a sadleback carpet anemone. once home I looked it up and found pics of what seemed to be what I had. guess I was wrong and its a Gigantea. right now I honest feel like givin up the whole hobby. I met some nice people online but to talk the way u did not fair.

Tommie- Look, you made a mistake just like we all have before. I dont think anything 55 said was wrong and I think you took it the wrong way. This is a discussion board and posts like this are gonna get posted. Just take the anemone back and learn from the mistake. Dont say you're gonna give up on the hobby, good luck with everything.

I agree. I don't think 55semireef was trying to beat on you Tommie he's trying to help. I do agree with what he said. I had a lfs sell me a Atlantic Carpet as a possible host for my Percs then I found out it would likely eat my Percs if it got the chance. Live and learn. Be carefull listening to your LFS. If they would sell a Gigantea to you with your setup / age of setup I question their knowledge and or morals. I would suggest maybe a BTA for your setup but not right away. Wait 6 months at least (some say a year) before you add it. Anem's need very stable parameters which are very hard to get in a new tank / smaller tank. Any chance we could get some overall pics of your biocube? I've been wanting one for a while.. Stick around here and read read read you'll learn alot. Good luck with whatever you decide. Feel free to ask questions you'll get lots of reply's here.

When it comes to clownfish and anemones, nobody knows for sure if the fish will adopt the anemone. This carpet anemone/Maroon clownfish combo might yet work out.
Nobody has positively ID'd this anemone yet, have they? What does the underside look like, tommiegary... can you post a picture or describe it? Are there any purple looking bumps on it's column above the foot?
By the time we ID the anemone the clowns might already be in the anemone!
Even if the fish don't host in that anemone you'll want to properly ID it so you know what's required to keep it alive...

its not a matter of hosting the clowns are happy now and the anemone seems happy. what people are saying is that my system wont keep a carptet and or least kind I got which people are saying its a Gigantea....
going to try and take pics of the under part and foot.
my lps isnt open till tomarrow so I cant return it as of yet...

these are best I can get

so I have it in a 29 bio cube thats for 45 pounds of live rock and a pair of maroons. can this be kept there ok? all my water par are perfect. I didnt mean to sounds mean or crude I was so upset after getting the carpet and thought it was somthing else guess the old saying kill the measger. 55 sorry for takin things out on u. I know u just wanted to help.
So to be clear I do have Haddon's and I dont have Gigantea??? more info please people

Thats why i asked for a pic of the underside a long time ago, I agree w/whats been stated above me, Its a haddoni carpet anemone, gigantea would have purple bumps on the column above the foot. Your's is smooth all the way down, hence; S. haddoni.
You may be able to keep this anemone for awhile, maybe a year, if your lucky, in the 29g aquarium, but in that time you may end up losing any other fish in the tank besides the clowns, haddoni are notorious fish eaters. It will also grow big enough to take up your entire tank.
I am not trying to be negative, just stating the facts.
About the hosting question, Have you noticed the maroon hanging out in the general area of the anemone? That is usually the first step, hanging out and looking at it. Thats when you know that one of the next few nights he will probably be hosted by the anemone.
Good luck guy;
austin
