Help Picking Another Anemone.

Hi everyone,

I have a 275 gallon SPS tank, right now I have 1 RBTA in there that is doing real well, my captive breed ocellaris final hosted in it after I had it for about 4 months. They have been hosting in it now for about 4-5 months since.

Anyway, I would like to add another anemone to my tank, it is high light and high flow for the SPS....Here are my requirements:

- Will NOT eat fish or sting them and lead to their death
- Colorful
- Likes the high light and high flow
- Will not multiple at a fast rate (my RBTA only split once and that's because I was feeding it a piece of shrimp once a week)
- I have a sand bed, so it can either like LR or where the sand meets the LR.

Please let me know what your suggestions are. I am going to get another pair of clownfish and this is the main reason for it. I am going to put it on the other side of the tank in relation to where the RBTA is now.

I am thinking a pair of onyx clowns or maybe something else, not sure at this point.

Please let me know.

Thanks,

Nick

P.S. Pictures are welcome ;).

IF you are worried about fish predation then no S. haddoni and LTA can also eat some fish, not sure about Crispa.

S. gigantea can do well in the situation you described and they are a lil bit safer but all anemones can eat fish and they are hard to find a healthy one H. magnifica is another option
For Onyx i would go with Gigantea or Magnifica but finding healthy ones is a tricky thing

the only anemone that is pretty safe is BTA and even they have been known to eat fish when the fish is ill

Hey guys,

Thanks for tghe suggestions. Few questions:

- Aren't the gigantea considered a carpet anemone? Wouldn't that make them more likely to eat fish?

I do not know much about anemones that's why I am asking ;).

- I do know they are tough to find, but if I can find a healthly one, what is the chance that it will eat small centropyge angels? Like my C. joculator ot C. interruptus?

- What type of environment do they like? Rock or where the sand and LR meet?

- What are things to look for when buying a gigantea? Can these be "dyed'? Are there such things are red gigantea?

Thanks,

Nick

Both my LTA and H crispa have eaten fish that got too close, that's what nems do.
Both times were young blond naso's, and happened first and second day.
Not a cheap date!

i have a C.potteri and i dont worry about it eating my angels but a potters is cheap compared

There are thre carpets S. haddoni S. Gigantea and Mertensi

S gigantea is not as predatory as haddoni
there are people who have kept gigantea long term and never lost a fish not too many haddoni owners that still all have their fish

Red Gigantea would be amazing but i have never seen one

there are lots of blues and purples and Gary M. has a mulitcolored one
The are supposed to preffer sand but i see allot mounted in the rocks.

things to look for are even coloration on the oral disk and healthy plump tentacles sick ones have semi deflated tentacles even when they are inflated
also look for a tight mouth not gaping and try to get it to feed in the LFS :)

you have a sweet tank Nick(ive seen the pics) im a Nick too all the good ones are ;)

ouch So Crispa is just as hungry as M dorensis i saw my dorensis eat a fish as it swam by.

just a reminder all anemones can be fish eaters but it seems to happen most often when the fish is either new to the tank or when something is scarred into the anemone

Yeah, it was a bummer.
But FWIW I've had these nems about 5 yrs and that's the only 2 fish they ate.
Both happened in about 2 weeks of each other.
I figured the first naso was just stupid!
After throwing down another $89 for the second I felt stupid!LOL
So then I got a tennenti tang, which swam soooooo close at first.
She's cool now though.
I've seen fish launch across the tank after getting a touch.
Still love those nems though!

Thanks Nick :D. I agree Nicks are the best, haha ;). Thanks for the compliment, have you seen my tank since I re-did it? Click the red house, it will take you to the thread ;).

So a blue or purple gigantea sounds like it would fit :). Few more questions:

- How can I tell if it has been "dyed"?

- What do I need to look for in terms on the health of the mouth and foot? I always hear about looking at these two specifically along with the tentacles, like you mentioned.

- Where is the best place to buy them from?

- Any luck online? I do not really have any good LFS around that would be able to score a blue or purple gigantea.

- What other clownfish naturally host in gigantea?

- Anyone have any pics of their gigantea :)?

Thanks again everyone!

Nick

a dyed gigantea would be easy to spot look at the base of it it should not be the same color as the tentacles The base will be closer to beige
My LFS has a tank full of blue and purple gigantea there are some nice ones in there but i cant reccomend shipping any anem. unless you feel like driving almost to cleveland to get it :)
They are a RC sponser and have great stuff not sure if its worth the drive from michigan but its not out of the realm of possibility

there are not a lot of Dyed carpets around thankfully yellow is a bad color for sure
