Woke up this morning to find my healthy 5" powder blue covered in ICKY THERE HAS BEEN NO NEW FISH ADDED TO THE TANK FOR OVER TWO MONTHS I added a pistol shrimp two weeks ago can they carry ?? there is no way to catch him in my DT tank am I destined to loose all my fish ?? is there any thing I can do to many corals to treat the DT tank and quarantine tank is to small to hold all the corals, can corals carry?? :headwally: :headwally: :(
 
Cysts can be on any surface.Very unlikely for inverts but possible on bases of rock ,etc, if the coral comes from an infested tank. It may be the fish had ich right along and a partial immunity.

I have a couple of empty 30 gallons qts and would be happy to keep and attempt to treat your fish if you can catch them and bring them over. LMK.
 
I think powder blues are one of the most prone fish to get ich. Ich lives in most of our tanks... in the sand on the outside of fish or even in their gills. If a fishes immunity is weakend (malnutrition/stress), Ich can hit them hard. Make sure the fish is getting good food, keep up with water changes(siphon sand bed) and possibly try a reef safe treatment for ich.
 
I'm sorry, but you've gotten some really misguided advice here. If you read the stickies about Ich in the Disease Forum, you'll understand. Also, check on any threads commented upon by MrTuskfish. He's a real expert on this subject. To sum it up, you need to remove all fish from your display tank for ten weeks and treat them in a quarantine tank. If you leave just one fish in the display, you will never eradicate Ich from your system. Here are some hints on catching fish:

There are three different treatment procedures including Copper (Cupramine), Hyposalinity and Tank Transfer. Read about them and choose whichever suits your level of involvement. I will say that Hypo is the most challenging and apt to fail, IMO. You do not need to quarantine the corals. Ich needs a fish host to survive and all invertebrates can stay in the display tank. Ich is not present in all our tanks. Garlic may make your fish more interested in eating, but it doesn't boost the immune system in any way.
 
I agree with elliesuz on the method to eradicate. If you can get the fish into qt an leave the main tank fallow for 8-10 weeks that is your best chance for success. Unfortunately it often takes tearing down a lot if not all of your rock stack to get them out. It stinks I have had to do this before and it is no fun.
I have a couple tanks not being used that you could borrow I you would like to try. One is a 44 pentagon and one is a 20 high that used to be fresh water so it probably has had copper before.
IMO hypo wasn't that hard of a method to accomplish, you just need to be vigilant about keeping it at the proper salinity.

Its the best thing to do. I now tank transfer all my fish. Its alot easier than it sounds. waiting the 10 weeks isnt though.

Is there anything we can do to prevent ich from coming in on our inverts or corals without qting them?

Norm, I have a 55 gallon tank you're welcome to borrow for as long as you need. I can drive it over and help you get the fish out if you'd like tomorrow.

THIS ! tom has forgotten more about fish than 99% of the cats on RC.
 
tomonts could have been transferred if shipping bag water was poured into the aquarium- even more likely if gravel was included with the pistol shrimp
