Here we go again... The "nth" tank build!!

The dictionary describes the "nth" as...

1. being the last in a series of infinitely decreasing or increasing values, amounts, etc.
2. utmost; extreme: to the nth degree.
3. used to refer to an unknown number in a series of numbers

This certainly describes my latest tank! I cannot count the number of times I have set up a tank, only to leave the hobby a couple years later. I really thought about why I keep torturing myself and taking down tanks when they are just starting to reach their prime. I've come to the conclusion that I enjoy "the thrill of the chase" (setting up a tank) more than the actual prize itself, a well balanced reef tank. I suppose I feel a rush when designing a new system that is unexplainable as it consumes all of my free time. With that said, I have no idea how long this tank will be up and running, although if I were a betting man (which I am), I would put a bet against me having the tank up for more than 3 years. In fact, I would set the over/under at 2.5 years! Well, enough rambling. Let's get this build started!!

The tank will be a shallow, rimless 36x30x16 (75g). It is currently being made by Keith Grandt and will be constructed of starphire glass and have an external overflow. I have read and seen pics of Keith's work and decided that it was time to "pay the man"! I just love the external overflow design and will incorporate a Herbie style drain.

The stand is almost finished and is being built by Chris Tran of San Jose. You may remember Chris who used to make stands for Max at the Aquarium Showroom. He actually made my last stand and it came out looking great. The new stand will definitely top my last stand as I think it looks phenomenal so far! I'll let you be the judge of it when Chris sends me all the pics. I'll give you a hint, it looks very similar to a stand designed by a person back east.:) After reading his thread and drooling over fantastic pictures of his stand and tank, I told myself if I ever come back to the hobby, I want a stand like his!! Here's another hint, his pics are used by Ecotech Marine. That probably gave it away, hehe.

Here is what I have accumulated so far:
1. Aquamaxx CO-2 skimmer
2. CeramEco Vida rocks: These are rocks made from ceramic. I bought a bonsai shaped rock and a few of the branch style rocks.
3. Tons of PVC parts for plumbing
4. Algae Free Hammerhead Magnet
5. Cobalt Aquatics 200 watt Neotherm heater
6. Tunze Silence Electronic Recirculation Pump 1073.05

Future acquisitions:
1. Neptune Apex
2. MP60 or 2xMP10's
3. BRS RO/DI
4. 10-20lbs of uncured live rock (enough to seed my Vida rock w/coralline)
5. Hyperion S1? AI Hydra 52? Kessil 360w?

I am still undecided about the lighting, sump and circulation. I am leaning toward the Pacific Sun Pandora Hyperion S-1 LED/T-5 lighting or the soon to be released AI Hydra 52. A pair of Kessil 360's are also in the running. As far as circulation, I may either do a single MP60 or a pair of MP10's. I just need to test how well the MP10's do on 1/2" thick glass.

are you turning into kinetic lite? haha, put me in line for the tank.

love keith grant tanks and the external overflow. do you have a diagram of the overflow drawn up that you can share? i have one and only thing i wouldve changed is to have the overflow setup for a bean machine and deeper so i can have more room for the standpipes to sit lower.

I miss Kinetic:( Loved his pics of his tank. I don't have a diagram of it, unfortunately, but the dimensions will be 14 x 4.5 x 10". It will have two holes which can accommodate a pair of 1" bulkheads. I am going to be using the Herbie style drain and have one as the main drain and the other as the emergency drain.

Psi, can you tell me the dimensions of your external overflow? Do you have any pics of your tank? Would love to see another Keith Grandt tank! I did go a little deeper as the original design had the height of the overflow chamber at 6". I asked Keith to make it 10".

Nice workshop welcome back I have a similar sized tank but mine is 24" tall. I went with 2 Radion pros absolutley get full coverage no shading on the edges of tank
So far my chalices and zoas are doing great I'm about to start stocking it with sps frags.

Don't you love the width? I almost went with a 36" wide tank but felt like it would fit better in my room. My last tank was 36" wide and I loved it. Damn, maybe I should have gone 36" wide again?

Yes love the width, I really wanted a 5' long by 36" but this came available and I couldn't pass it up. I am more than happy with it. You can view it from all sides anywhere in the room where I set it up.

I'll get pix and dimensions tomo night.

For sumps, check out synergy reefs and elite aquatics. i like the fully covered sumps. Also, settlement tank if you have the space.
