Here we go again... The "nth" tank build!!

Currently, my Vida rocks have some sort of short, fuzzy algae growing from it. It seems like it's some sort of fuzz algae for the lack of a better term. It gets taken care of pretty fast by the trochus snails though. It could be leaching phosphate as my phosphate levels are really high, 0.3-0.4 using the Hanna ULR phosphate test.

You are describing exactly what I was talking about. Other people have mentioned its silicates that are leaching from the rock. My phosphates are at 0 as well checked with a hanna meter.

that sounds like what i was having issues with real reef rocks.. i had so called 'the real reef rocks' in my biocube long time ago like 2-3 years ago when i first got in to the hobby and after 7-8 months later, i was seeing this white stuff coming out from a hole in the rock clouding the tank every few hours.

anways, i love the shape of vida rocks and actually i placed an order few weeks ago, so i wanted to know. well seems like its a lot better than the real reef rocks..
 
Hopefully the leeching will stop soon. Perhaps we should have used some muriatic acid on the rocks prior to introducing it to the tank.
 
I think it will be fine. I have seen the same hair algae stuff(brown) with dry base rocks as well when one of my friends who own a lfs setup his own tank at the shop last year. He had the same thing happened, so i don't think its the rock you are using.

Oooh, that's a great question. I'd say the Keith Grandt tank is 98% as good as my former Elos 120xl. They both are made out of starphire with impeccable build quality. I'd say that the silicone seams are near perfect on both, with a very slight edge going to Elos. The overflow definitely goes to Keith G, as it's external and leaves me more room inside the tank. The edges are beveled perfectly on the Keith Grandt tank as on the Elos. The only fault that I could find with Keith's tank is that he did not put overflow teeth on the overflow. I wish he had the capability to machine a set of teeth and somehow incorporate it seamlessly into the overflow. With that said, the tank still looks great, even without the teeth. If it had teeth, I honestly would not trade my tank for a similarly sized Elos tank. Hmm, come to think of it, I would not trade my tank for an Elos tank even without the teeth!
 
Hi Sahin, unfortunately, I have a slight hair algae problem that came from a frag plug. The algae has migrated to my rocks and I feel stupid for allowing it to do this. Lesson learned, ALWAYS cut the frag off the plug! I bought a couple tuxedo urchins and a sea hare, and they are doing their job. As soon as they take care of most of the algae, I will update this thread with pics. The good news is that the corals and fish are doing great!

At least the issue is under control. The lack of a recent update made me think you were onto nth+1 tank. :lol:

Look forward to the updated pics once the algae is hopefully gone for good. :)
 
Haha, thanks Sahin! Yeah, given my reputation, I could see how a lack of an update might feel like I quit the hobby again.:) I'm still here, stronger than ever, even though I was a bit lazy during the summer months. I'm thinking about adding an ATS to combat my algae problem. A Maxspect Riptide pump will be added to increase flow. Might even get rid of my mp10's if the Riptide can hold its own.

An ATS will definitely help. But will take upto a couple of months to kick in. But once it does, you bet it will outcompete the stuff in the display.

The Riptide looks pretty awesome from the videos I've seen. I think I will be getting one of the smaller versions (think its 35watts) when it is released and get rid of my MP10's as well! :D
 
Yeah, I'm just researching the best type of ATS right now. I should get the smaller Riptide, but I can't wait and will most likely buy the medium sized one asap.
 
Just ordered the medium Maxspect gyre so I can be the guinea pig for small tank owners! Can't wait to test it out when it comes in.

I just saw that Aquarium Specialty got some in. I was thinking about getting one for my 120. Keep us up to date on how it works for you.
 
Yeah, I'm horrible at updating my threads. My tank is pretty much on cruise control now and I'm basically waiting for the corals to grow out. In the past few months, I have added a DOS, an ATS and just today, I added a small mini fridge to keep all my frozen fish foods and amino's next to my tank. It's so convenient having the fridge next to the tank as I can feed frozen easily now. I suppose you can say I am a lazy reefer and this proves it!:)
 
I also sold the gyre and bought a pair of the mp40wqd's and absolutely love these pumps. My t5's were also replaced by a Reefbrite actinic strip.
