Hmm.. we haven't had some shaking in a long time

When was the last time you felt an earthquake here in SoCal? I think mine was last year.. it was a harsh up-down sudden move that lasted like 2 seconds. Short but powerful!

1 year without any movement really makes me feel worried. My new setup is more than 6 FT tall including the stand! I had braced the hell out of the stand against the wall to prepare it against such shakings so I wonder how it will hold up?

I'd be OK with very small frequent shakings rather than a long period of inactivity then all of a sudden.. BAM! A big one.

when was the last time you felt anything? Is your tank prepared?

Here is a positive spin. May be if we have a decent one, it might help speed up the housing bubble bursting so some of us can afford to buy a house in OC. Of course my tank may crash along wih other stuffs in the house but I think it's worth the trade off.

Then again it may not help with the housing bubble but at least mother nature can show us who's boss once in a while. I feel fearless since the last northridge.

Well there was just a huge earthquake (6.4) near Indonesia an hour ago.

xtm, be glad that the last earthquake you experienced lasted 2 seconds. The Northridge quake lasted 10 seconds of constant extreme shaking. The Great Alaska earthquake of 1964 (magnitude 9.2) lasted 3 to 5 MINUTES nonstop !!

I hate talking about these topics as well but ... preparedness is the key. I was just hoping maybe we can share tips as to what everyone is doing to prevent tank catastrophes..

i used to wake up in the middle of the night worrying about how my life would be in the crapper if a big quake hits and my 90g was on the floor...i stopped thinking about it all together - if it happens - there's not much we can do about it (other than leave the hobby - f$% that!)

An acrylic tank will be on the floor just as quickly as a glass tank. The tank will probably be in one piece, but you will still need a mop.

I've got an acrylic tank and if that thing falls over, it's not going to do me any good other than an easier clean up since acrylic doesn't shatter. But it's going to break if it falls. I've got a 55 Gallon on a 30 inch stand. Now water weight approx 8lbs/gallon, so that comes out to roughly 440 lbs, not to mention the rock that I've got in the tank which is denser and heavier than the water it displaces. I beg to differ, an acrylic tank hitting the floor with all that weight of water and rock..It will most likely crack as well... But I think you guys are worrying over nothing... I watched a special on NBC and they did a simulation to a room with furniture that was and wasn't strapped to the wall... needless to say when the furniture is strapped to the wall, the outcome was much better.

A big tank weighs so much, it takes a LOT to get it moving...as long as you can prevent it from tipping (use straps belted to the studs of your walls, I would think you are fine.. make sure you strap them down as high up on your setup (canopy) as possible, and then maybe top of the stand as well... with that, i think for most of us we would just have some water spill over from the wave the quake would make... a mini tank tsunami if you will..and at that point, hell, its a good wavemaker, better than TUNZE

It will take a much larger than Northridge size quake to destroy your tank I would think, and at that point, you should be more worried about your life than your tank

The lack of activity is a bit worrysome, but here is a link to recent quakes:

As you can see, there are ALWAYS little quakes.. EACH day... you just dont feel them.

Also think about injury. I knew a girl that was cut really bad by her aquarium during the northridge quake (she was in bed at the time). If you have a glass tank make sure you dont run to save it. If you have one in your kids room, consider enclosing it and attaching the enclosure to a wall so it wont come crashing down.

Agreed.. acrylic will crack, and is still sharp to to the touch, but glass will shatter and spray everywhere.

Yeah tell me about it.
I live up here in Paso Robles and i was lucky my tank wasn't set up yet i only had my LR curing in the garage in a rubbermaid tub and i lost a few gallons when the 6.2 hit in San Simeon(Hearst Castle) in December 2002
I would hate to see what would happen now!
San Andreas Fault is only 25 miles away.

I don't want to think about it!
