HOB Fuge - Help a girl out! 14 BC!!!

Sheesh. Okay, so I am tinkering around with putting an HOB on my Oceanic BC 14g. Yes, an all-in-one; thus, the "sheesh" factor because I have to figure out exactly how to rig this thing up. I am considering a custom in the event I can't figure out how to use a pre-made while keeping the hood. So, here are some questions I've been wondering about:

Do all HOB fuges work w/gravity? Does anyone use a return pump? Since I have the hood (w/hinges that I'd like to keep in tact, if possible), I was thinking that if the whole fuge including light height (saw a possibility on nanotuners.com) was less than 14", I could still keep my hood and mod it - basically using my Dremel to expand some openings to accommodate return hoses to/from the fuge. I have a NC12 skimmer in chamber #2 that could either stay there or move to the fuge (also depends on height as the hood might hit it when open). I was thinking it would also be a possibility to move all of my peripheral equipment like thermometer, probes, float switch, etc. to a section in the fuge as an alternative. I can accommodate 14w x 4d x ?h (dependent on light). I'd place a small pump in chamber #1 going to the fuge and assume another at the end of the fuge going back into chamber #3 of the tank.

Any suggestions? Anyone out there put an HOB on an all-in-one? Oh, and I already know that I could make chamber #2 a fuge but I want to keep the skimmer so that's out.

Hi,

I have a BC14 and have toyed with the idea, too. So it'll be interesting to see what you decide to do.

I have seen some that have turned chamber #2 in to a fuge by scraping off the black paint on the back and sticking a light against the outside. But that leaves the matter of the skimmer...

I also have a NC12 in the second chamber. We had considered an overflow with a sump/fuge. But I'm just not ready to deal with that.

Good luck!

Little off topic, but I was wondering how you guys like the NC12 do you notice a difference? I was thinking weekly water changes should suffice for such a small tank. Also, Did the NC12 fit easily in chamber 2?
Thanks, and the fuge sounds like a nice idea.

So far I'm happy with it. Required trimming of the back edge lip of the chamber for it to fit. It also needs to sit on something to get it to sit high enough (guess the NC12 chamber is not as deep).

I get light green/tea colored skimmate and there's only corals and inverts in the tank. I'm adding two clowns this weekend. The skimmer was really in prep of adding fish. I expect to skim more when there's a real bioload.

HTH
