Holy reefer!!!! Dd 250 custom

Thanks Emilio!
After I looked at tanks built by the popular 2 companies in Canada, and all of the major US manufacturers, I was convinced that Marineland/Perfecto was the best one for me.
They had a 300 DD tank on display at MACNA in Atlanta last year - and the edge finish work, silicone, and overall quality was superb.
Then I found out that they can do custom stuff - which was important to me, because of the overflow I wanted.
BTW - BeAnAnimal's thread "Safe and Silent Overflow" is where I got my design for the overflow

What a beast! The workmanship looks great.
I've got the 300 DD on order right now... I take it they had no concerns with all the bottom drilling?

Yep - was a challenge humping it into the house too!
No, Mike - Keith Moerkel (sp?) at Marineland/Perfecto was great to advise on hole location from a safety perspective. Other than that, they were happy to do whatever I asked on the tank. I did have them euro-brace around the inside of the tank bottom tho...

Did you notice the front and back panels were water jetted into a curve that allows the end mounted overflow to be better integrated into the tank design?

Thanks guys!
How about the "flow control" pics?

There are 3 Oceans Motions OM-4s that create current and motion in the tank.
Notice all the plumbing. ( My chiropractor has been a busy man:D)

The center OM-4 is for the return from the sump - it has a drum that makes the water come out of the OM - Omni Flex Nozzles one at a time, and moving from left to right, adifferent nozzle every 15 seconds. This I hope- will give a sort of "washing tide" that pushes debris toward the overflow - on the right of the tank.
Note the nozzles - they - like all of Paul's stuff at Oceans Motions - are works of industrial art. The machine work is amazing to see in person. The nozzles allow you to aim the returns with more options of direction than the black knuckled Loc-Line. Wish they were black......
The ouside of the back panel is covered with the darkest window tint film I could buy at Lowe's. Seems to work pretty well. Easy to install, no spray paint!

And the overflow takes the water to the sump via the 2" black flex PVC going into the right end of the picture. The pipe coming from low left to high right at an angle is the return from the sump. It is pushed by a Reeflo Barracuda. Fed into the center OM-4 under the aquarium cabinet.

O.K. guys - time for YOUR input! What do you want to see next? (Geeez...kinda sounds like a peep show...are we sicko reefers or what?:lolspin:)
I want to keep this thread going - so...ASK QUESTIONS! PLEASE!:D

Very nice! But where are you going to put the plastic corner filter with charcoal and floss? No "real" tank is complete without one ... :lolspin:

I can't wait to see it completed!

SHEEEEEZ....
Rick - you are giving away our ages!!!

I mean - I am 7 years older than dirt!!!!

AHHHHH........the good ole days - when hi-tech fish keeping meant charcoal, and fiberglas filter floss in a "bubble-up" corner box filter!!!
Shoooot- I remember the first deliveries of undergravel filters to the store I shopped at! We scoffed at them..."that will never work"!!!!!

Funny - looking back at how we all want to "stop the tech train" at a point where we are comfortable.

But - but doing that - we don't continue to learn do we?;)

My GOD!!! How incredible. Your overflow is very very nice. So what is the total system volume goin to be?

Do you have a place where your other tanks are at? How about the Koi pond?

And I have to ask..... how the hell much is your water bill?:eek1:

The total water volume on this system is approx. 500 gal.. In the same room with it, is a 360 gal. African Cichlid tank.
I will post some pics of the other stuff as we go along here - I promise!
And - thank goodness I have a water well! I use the well water for the CIchlids - it is great for them as is.
There is a 300 gpd pumped RO/DI system that puts water into a 300 gallon holding tank, as well as keeps the reef tank's sump topped off. And then there is a 150 gal tank thank I mix one bucket of salt at a time in, for water changes.
19251733.jpg

Here is the RO/DI - I bought it from Bulk Reef Supply, and it has a 2:1 reject rate which is half of what most claim, so I am trying to not waste water (believe it or not...)
19251729.jpg

The RO water goes in here first.
19251736.jpg

I forgot the holding tank for new specimens...it is a 75 gal. tank in the sump room
19251685.jpg

And the 350 gal "ole' ugly"...It is a glass tank I got agreat deal on thru Craig's List....($300.00!) It holds water - and for a frag tank.......that was my main concern!
It measures 84''x 40''x 27'' I think.

Nice build pics -- you are moving along quite quickly :lolspin:
How are you going to stop the water skiing fish from taking a dive over (no pun intended :twitch:) the overflow with that much flow??

That is a gorgeous tank. Great design! I'll be keeping an eye on this build.

You wouldn't happen to have pics of your cichlid system online anywhere, would you? I'd love to see it, being a cichlid fan/keeper myself.

Here is a recent FTS.....(Fukk Tank Shot. The tank measures 72'' x 36'' x 32'' - and has its own sump and pump room in the basement below it.

Some fish pics from it:

Alan - Actually I tested it with 6000 gph - but, I am using a Barracuda for the return pump currently. I havonly had one fish go over the overflow, and I fished him out of the sump!

What's the plan for temperature control on the new tank? I know the ProfiLux will monitor temp and device power, but size/number of chiller(s) and/or heaters? In the case of chillers, are you plumbing to the tank or sump? Heater placement?

Thanks for asking Rick!
I have heaters (currently 2-300 watters) in the sump - placed in such a way that the flow of water from the tank must flowover them on it's way thu. I do have 2 chillers:,a 3/4 hp and a 1-1/2 hp. I have not needed either - yet...partially because the basement is cooler than the house - and I think that helps reduce heat build up in the system.
But I have placed extra bulkheads in the sump end walls for the possibility of needng to plumb in a chiller.

If I do need them they will be controlled by the ProfiLux for sure!
