Home Depot lighting

I went to home depot today, looked at some lights and saw this flood light I think 100 watt helogen, I was thinking of getting it for my new tank, because I heard Metal helide is helgen and its murcerey vapor, and Im all confused, I have seen people use these types of lighting but I am just making sure that this will work, Can I do LPS and softies under these lights? Or maybe SPS?

Thanks,
Patrik

I'm sure you could grow some healthy algae under it. Those don't have a specific Kelvin rating or necessarily deep PAR ratings. They are designed as flood lights. I have seen some people use them over refugiums, however. I am all about trying new things though, so let us know how it turns out.

Pat I would think that HD would have a more powerful light than 100 watts, I know that Lowes has them on special order, but I will look in to how much and the highest wattage and price when I am next there. And halogen bulbs are in essense the same as MH, they out put the same anount of light per wattage.

you probalby wont be able to produce the PAR and especialy not the K ratings that you would with a quality aquarium ballast.
also, another problem with halogens is they get REALLY hot, even hotter than normal MH. i have a 500 watt halogen in my room as the central sorce of light and it definatly heats up the room when it is only half on( you can dim it...). ive never felt a huge temp change in the entire room with my 400 watt halide.
also, every once in a while it will smell like burning protein from a fly or seomthing getting caught in it. even if you were to find one that woudl give you a good K and PAR (and i have seem some halogens that are made for reefs), the temp would be too much to deal with, IMO.

This is a, Lithonia Lighting 175 Watt 120 Volt Bronze Cast Aluminum Metal Halide Floodlight

The third hyperlink before was a waste; it was to a light that was 50 watts.

Both of the lights have built in multi-tap ballasts.

First one is $150 and the second is $200.

Well you see reefman, the whole point of buying the one from home depot was because I dont wanna spend alot, for that proce i can get an entire Metal halide system

hi,i think you need to look at the spectrum of these lamps, they are way to red ,red-orange as was mentioned, and will grow algae like crazy,as an oldtimer i have been there. HD does have a 100watt flouresent "lights of america" fixture that is 6500K and is a good cheap option. it is also avalible in 65watts and replacement bulbs are like$ 12.they are cool running as well.
i hope this helped, and best of luck!

i think getting into reefing or just plain salt water keeping and saving money by skimping on lights is an oxymoron. it's like buying a benz and putting cheap gas cuz you save 10 cents per gallon. get a decent light system you can afford and skimp somewhere else perhaps cabinetry tank stand or hoods. not on your primary source of food, life and overall tank appearance.IMO.

You can use that metal halide floodlight from Home Depot with no problem. You just have to change the lamp. The MH lamp that comes with it is for lighting parking lots and the K rating is probably around 4000. You need at least 10,000K. The lamp that comes with that fixture is about $30.00. THe lamp you need is about $65.00. Thats why the fixture is so cheap. I myself use similar fixtures. I had a few of them left over from a job lighting up the Plaze Hotel in Manhattan. It's the lamp thats critical, not the fixture. Just don't get the sodium fixture, the lamps are not interchangeable and a sodium lamp is not correct for reefs.

Okay so if I get the one from home depot, would this bulb work with it?
