How 'bout posting pics of everyone's custom stands

mflamb-

Very nice work. That is going to be an awesome setup.
I like how the canopy doesn't rest on the tank. That always had me worried. Very innovative design.

Marino-

I've said it before and I'll say it again...NICE! But seriously, you need to stop making us all look bad.

Thanks. I have been looking for an excuse to get my tank into the Large Tank Forum so I can play with the big boys. Maybe some day I'll get to venture into large-tank land.

Notice I said "my old 75?" That tank is now dead as a result of the after effects of Hurricane Rita. Mandatory evacuation; no power for two weeks; couldn't get back into town for 10 days = a very dead reef tank. I am upgrading now, but not the way I wanted to do it. :(

I'm really sorry :(

Was your house damaged at all...

Oops...i just realized this was someones thread.

Dont want to hijack it...
Anyway...my condloences to you...that was trulay a stocked...yet beutiful tank.

Looks identical to sidewinders stand . Very Nice!

clkwrk...thanks, it is a copy of sidewinder770's stand. No reason to reinvent the wheel!!! What is the wood on the 180? I really like that, and nice functional design.

Here's mine. It isn't anything spectacular, but I built it all myself in about 6 hours along with a matching TV cabinet (not including staining fo course, and doors were bought). The framework is fir, the face frame and doors are maple, and large surface areas are cabinit grade birch plywood. I conditioned all the wood and stained each type a little different so they all matched up somewhat close. They doors actually match very well in person, but they always look light in pictures. I think it was the finish they put on them. I also put a touch panel in the canopy for tank status and control, in case you were wondering what that bright square reflection was.

Here's a picture of the touch panel

smcnally- I love the touch panel. Where did you get it?

Nice work on the stand

I agree. Is it for display only or does it allow you to control devices? More info would be great.

It is a Crestron touch panel. I program Crestron systems for homes, and decided to incorporate one into my tank. It is fully functional and allows me to do virtually anything. I have it set-up now where I tied one of its relays into an electronic valve on my RODI filter and I timed how long it takes for my RODI to fill 1 gallon. So now, on the tochpanel, I can select how many gallons I want to fill for a water change, press "Start", and not worry about overfills. I even programmed a progress meter into it.

I think we need a Crestron Touch Panel thread and some professional guidance on how to set one of those up. That is just too cool. You can't post something like that without making other reefers salivate. :)

LOL...They are very pricey, and unfortunately not worth it for most hobbiests. I got most of my stuff for free from work and from clients upgrading their equipment. The smallest touch panel offered from Crestron runs around $1,500, and the cheapest processor is just under $2,000. They have their own programming language as well, so if you don't feel like learning to program in their language you'd be stuck hiring a programmer at around $125-$175 per hour. I was looking at building a complete setup and offering them for sale, but they would end up being around $4,000 and frankly not worth it to the end user. They would be cool for people that have lots of cash though, especially if it was all done with this 12" tabletop panel.

Oh well. Neat stuff always has a catch - and it is always the same one - cash! :) I figured as much... Back to the cool stands. Yours is very nice, BTW - especially with that little touch panel. :)

Here's what I am trying to get ideas for which to cover. Any suggestions guys?

Progress is very slow nowadays. Just haven't had much time to work on the beast. Earlier today I posted a question about my plumbing. See what you guys think...

That tank fits in there perfectly, did you plan it or did it just work out that way. anyways it seems like a nice easy job, it looks like you are more or less just facing the stand and canopy off. I think large reef tanks stand out in a home so The stands should just be a compliment to the room. Utilize the same wood and or colors that are consistant with the surrounding area. I love tanks but when they reach these sizes, we have to be carefull not to cross the line into tackiness. You never know when or if you may need sell your house. If the tank looks like it belongs there, than you have done a great job and I would say that you are well on your way. Keep us posted with pics of your progress.

Believe it or not the tank actually fits in there perfect. I had planned on having to do a slight remodel of the wall, but it turns out that it fit perfect. So far so good. I want to make it blend in with the other trim, so I will probably start on my finish coverings this week.
