How cool is this!

I say when the weather warms up, we should get a group together and see what kind of sculptures/pillars/backgrounds we can make. We actually was gonna get a group together and do this before. I think a few even ordered buckets or the cement stuff? I forget what it was called. Thorite? Would be kind of fun to see what we could come up with, maybe somethin' we could do at one of the meetings in the summer.....that's if there is enough interests in it.

I've heard of them, but I think last time I checked they was really expensive.....or more than I wanted to pay.

DIY is more fun, espically when a few reefers get together and do a project. May not look as good, at least when I do it :) but the learning experience is what I enjoy.

Funny you bring this up Steve...as Brian is working on this exact plan on our living room floor as I type this. :) He found this about a week ago and has been enthralled with it ever since. We're redoing all the rock work in the tank in a few weeks when we switch over to BB, and he thought it would be a fun project/idea to try. I think the only thing we're going to do in this "way" is a cover for the overflow. Essentially, Brian made an overflow shell out of egg crate and he's zip-tying rock to it, then filling in the gaps with the Great Stuff. We'll then epoxy the Great Stuff and cover it in crushed coral. We've been taking pictures so far. We'll post them once we're finished...

i almost decided to do something like this....but i figured it would take too much of my time.....so i scrapped the idea....very cool nonetheless

Moriah, I actually have been readin' up on the thread a little now and seen where Brian has been posting on it. Pretty cool. Can't wait to see the finish project.

We're not planning on coating the rock, just the Great Stuff that we have sprayed on. We only use the Great Stuff to fill in holes and cover any sharp edges of the egg crate around the holes/caves. The Great Stuff dries this odd, very fake looking cream color that would stick out like a sore thumb, and it's also reactive to UV light so it should be coated with something if going in the tank. So the spaces in between the rock will be fake crushed coral fill, leaving the rock untreated.

I was going to build a wall on the small side of my large tank this may be an easier way to do it I may have to start investing into some zip strips. or find a place to buy in bulk :)

Very nice!

I think we're going to be (and have been) seeing more and more of stuff like this. I love live rock, but things that aren't taken from the oceans that work just as great and are cheaper... wow... how can we go wrong?

I'll bring some zip ties for bar-b-q !!!! :D Harbor Frieght in Hickory Hollow has load of them. Who's cooking, cause not everyone is a good cook! :D Ricky

I actually did something like this for my seahorse tank. It isn't really that hard to do and didn't take too much time to do. Mine doesn't look nearly as good as some I have seen but I am happy with it.

I was wondering if egg crate would be strong enough with the weight so I had some plastic mesh stuff used for gutter guard that I was going to try then I could just attach it to the out side of the tank. But with the foam I think it ec would support it but how sure are we that it is not bad for the tank?

someone was sayin' about the foam will break down overtime or break easy? Did I read it right? Said a piece could break off then clog your overflow causing a flood. It was something like that. I might see think about makin' some kind of frame with the egg crate and see what I can do with some smaller base rocks.
