how do you split anemone???

Today I tried feeding the nems a little less shrimp and the peices were about half as big. Ill update you on if it accepts it or not.

How big were the pieces you gave it this time? I always tried to feed my anemones small pieces (pencil eraser sized pieces at largest). Think about you trying to digest something large. You chew your food for a reason. Smaller sized pieces have more surface area, which is easier to digest.

The nems all accepted the shrimp. I fed them 1/5 peices of one shrimp but considering how small you feed them I may try that as well.

This is how my BTA looked about 3 days after I fed it a piece of "table shrimp" for the first time. I thought I'd killed it.

I now know that was just its excreted waste, which I sucked up with a turkey baster. After every piece it does that then ends up looking better. It keeps getting bigger, puffier and adding tentacles, especially filling in the middle.

I've noticed great growth with the table shrimp. Is my anemone starting to split, its foot has gone under a rock and but all the tenticles and the main body is out of the crack of the rock. it seems a little smaller than usual but not much and the mouth is poking out a little more. Any thoughts?

Ive been looking around on RC and other sites and some people blasted a powerhead straight at it and another guy acidently left his lights on for 24hrs. What do think would be the better way to do that between the powerhead, long lighting, and overfeeding?

None of those those methods they are stressed induced splits and could also kill the anemone.

Ok I think im finally brave enough to split my nem with a knife. I have heard of people sliting not compleatly through the nem when its still in the water and it will split that way. Does anyone have experience with that vs taking it out of the water and cutting it in half? Also I do not have a quarintine so would I just put the nem in my main tank?

if you are going to manually split it, do it right. take it out of the water, use a brand-spankin' new long razor blade, one pass, split through the mouth, done.

i've been splitting for years with success. i find it hilarious that people are always talking about 'stressing' a nem. they don't have central nervous systems therefore, they do not feel pain nor do they experience stress the same as other living creatures.

another note - if you are prepared to accept possible failure and death of both halves, then i would say do it. that would be worst case scenario. brightwell makes a coral dip called medicoral. not sure if it would work on a nem. it basically helps heal and prevents bacterial infections. i will sometimes put my split pieces in a floating breeder box while it heals up.

When you're done laughing...
Don't forget to tell all the coral keepers, that 'bad' water params does NOT 'stress' their corals, either!

i *am* a coral keeper. i never said stress doesn't have negative effects.

but, you fail to realize the difference between stress on a living entitiy with a central nervous sytem and one without. although the end result could be the same - death, stress on a nem or coral will not cause 'pain' as it would a fish or invert.

I have 3 nems so im not realy worried about losing all of them. Could I find a large container to put the nem it while it heals just like a large bowl or maybe even a pitcher? also how long should you keep it out of the main tank

Sorry to inform you...the failure is on the person that doesn't understand semantics.

i like the fish breeder containers because they are clear and you can monitor the nems while they heal, and they have slits in them to allow for current and food to flow through. once the wounds close up you can release them.

i split one on sat. here's what it looked like right after the procedure. don't freak out, it was looking good within an hour.
